BRITISH SUCCESS

After Heavy Fighting.
London, April 25. ? The indecisive'
action and slow progress of Generals '
Hart and Brabant are relatively nuimportant
when compared with the progress
of General French. It is now evident
that Lord Roberts wishes not only
to defeat the Bt>crs, but to pen them in
as at Panrdebnrg. To this end 40,000
British troops are concentrating in the
ontheasteru portion of the Orange Free
S4fnt.. nrwl nr.. .......... f i .... ...........11.... ... I
carefully devised plans, in which the
delay may be as much due to strategy as
to necessity. The success of this important
move almost entirely depends
on Geueral French. If he can sweep
down from the north with the rapidity l
of execution which he displayed at Kim- j
berloy and Paardeburg he will effect the
same swift, sudden transformation
which followed the cavalry evolutions
two months ago. According to last accounts
he was pursuing on successfully.
Every day the Boers remain at Wepener
improves General French's clianco of
success.
To put a girdle around the 2a, 000
Boers estimated to In- in the northern
part of the Orange Free State, Lord
Roberts has evidently taken large
chances. The British crities differ regarding
the result, while others reserve
their opinion until more definite news of
General French's progress is received.
There is a general impression that the
main advance upon Pretoria will ho
taken up without any reeoncentratiou at
Bloenifontein, as with more than half
the British army stretched in echelon
across the Orange Free State such a
change in directions would indetinetoly
delay the accomplishment of Lord Holders'
main objective.
It is reported that the British have occupied
Wepener after heavy lighting.
It is also said that the Boers are unable
to escape to tlio north and that great
developments are expected.
Itritish Occupy Itoodc Kop.
Lord Roberts reports that Pole-Ca
rp'iv s envision rencneu xionue Kop yesterday
without casualties. Its advance
was covered by cavalry and liorso artillery
which drove back the enemy with
heavy losses, their dead being left on
the ground* The luoui'O'd troops halted
for the night at Grootfonteiu and at 7
o'clock this morning were crossing the
Modder river at Vaalsbank, in accordance
with instructions to French to endeavor
to place himself astride the enemy's
line of retreat.
French's arrival near the Modder evidently
alarmed the Boers, who evacuated
their position near Dewet-J
during.tdie?dPH,'hi?lsiou this morning.
The mounted infantry drove the enemy
off the kopjes in the neighborhood of
the waterworks without casualties on
our side.
Hoers Attacked Hart.
Mazkiut, Basutolaml, April 25.?Generals
Hart and Brabandt have covered
only u short distance, finding a strong
force opposed to them bivouacked on the
ground they had occupied.
The tiring has been desultory and the
casualties very slight. The British are
edging up toward the Basutolaiul border.
Persistent rumors are in circulation
that Commandant Olivier, with 1,500
men, is preparing to attack General
Hart's rear. There is no sign of the advance
of General Rundle from Dewot's
dorp.
Tr to \ ?
v ?.-> npiiuvi iiiai urmg nas ueen
heard between Zuzetron nnd Wepener,
and it is believed that Generals Brabant
and Hart are in contact with the enemy.
The Boers are so su:merous that it
took them two days to cross the Caledon
river at Bastard's drift.
Boers Attack Dalgctty.
Mazf.ru, Basil tola juI, April 2.?.?On
the breaking upof the bivouac this morning
Generals Brabant and Ilart discovered
that the Boers who fell back toward
Wepener Monday had advanced during
the night several miles nearer to Strauss'
farm, which is a favorable position for
resistance.
Colonel Dalgctty was severely at tucked
with six guns Tuesday morning probably
with a view of preventing him assisting
the relief column. It seems that
Dalgettv has practically been relieved,
but the offensive attitude assumed by
the Boers this morning shows that to
have been erroneous. General Hart is
behind General Brabant's division,
which is waiting for the former to come
