THE WAR IN
SOUTH AFRICA
Boers Vigorously Attack British
at Wepener--Losses Heavy.
London, April 10.?The Boer attack
on General Brabant's force at Woponor
was resumed again sit dawn today. The
enemy's attuek on two or three sidos on ?
Monday lusted until 2:30 o'clock in the
afternoon, when tho tiring ceased, and ^
it wus believed that the enemy hud been
beaten off", but it was aiuiounced this
morning from Aliwalnorth that the (
fighting had again begun. i i
General Brabant's force, numbering
from 2,000 to 3,000, hold positions in a j
jruugu wuim > . it in mn uuum u muu ^
the numerical strength of tlio Boers is, ' (
but whatever i; may he, it is being rap- ;
idly augmented. A body of 2,Odd Boers
is marching toward Springfontein from '
Smith Held, between Wepencr and (
Springfontein. The detonat ion of heavy
guns was heard at Maseru on Monday.
Sir Godfrey JLagden, rho British resident
commissioner of Basutolnnd, has left
Maseru for the border.
The events in the southeast portion of
the Free State have caused the Eighth 1
division, which had been ordered to j
Fourteen Streams, to he dispatched to ;
"Springfontein.
Mysterious movements of troops at '
Bloemfontciu are proceeding. The news- I
* paper correspondents are not allowed to !
telegraph their destinations and the pro- j
sumption is that Lord Roberts is 111 nlcinft !
a disposition to out off the raids of the
Boer forces when they try to withdraw
northward from tho pursuing British
columns.
The reappearance of the Boers in the i
occupied country has caused a revival of j
the warlike feeling - among the Free !
Staters of tho l'Y.uresmitli and PhilipK)lis
districts. The federal agents are
xsy getting details of the surrendered
Boers, and owing t > the British garrisons
being withdrawn from theso districts
the British residents are uneasy
and have sent delegates to Springfontein
to ask for help. They were told
that steps for their defense would be immediately
taken.
The Boers are n p >ifed to have ventured
to the Biggarsberg and to he porting
heavy guns 4 miles north of Claudslaagte.
They are also said to have fortified
the vicinity of Wessol's Nek.
The war otficn proposes t-> land at
Cape Town b T >re the end of May 2'.), 000
horses, which will be conveyed there in j
23 steamers sailing from New Orleans,
Buenos Ayres and Australian ports.
A dispatch from Aliwalnorth says an
eugtigemeiit took place yesterday at
Wepener. The Be.ers' Yiekerx-Maxim
did considerable execution at lirst, but
the British guns soon got the range and
aid great havoc. I. he K >uxvilli5 com- i
mando lias pmc to Weponor.
The lighting was se vere and lasted all
day long. The Boers received a check.
The casualties were rather heavy on
both sides. Another commando is advancing
toward Wepenor from Dewett's
dorp.
Heavy fifrhtincr \v;i< continued at Wepener
this (Tuesday) morning. Tho reuui>
?.? ....iw../iiireu utxT uommandos
are attacking the. town.
News has been received of tho advance
of tho southern relief column toward
Mnfekiug. Tho Boers op nod lire
at sunrise with seven guns, including
one 100-pounder. This lias be.*11 the
most vigorous bombardment of tlie
siege. The Boer siege gnu alone has already
lired over fit) rounds.
Under cover of the lire the Boers advanced
to the northern face of the works,
but retired recipitately oncoming within
rifle range.
They also advanced to the southwestern
posts, but were repulsed.
The Boers under Commandant Jan
Cronje are evidently falling buck before
tho advance of tho southern relief column
and are concentrating with two
commandos, who are retiring before
Colonel Plumer in order to mnlr?? ?s
f ? ?-?* Imv-U I fit' ( i ) , V ] 1.
All the forts and outlying position:;
are manned, the troops are standing to
arms and everybody i s under cover.
All are convinced that this is the
Boers' last attempt.
A .11 V *. > >: . .
Aiuapuni i leiermarirzauvg sa.v:;
heavy eavuiouading commenced this
morning in rho vicinity of Elaand.-laagto.
A dispatch fn>m Lady-smith says (he
Boers have jiosted a big gnu on Knights
hill, north of Klundslnagte, and another
in the vieinirv of YA.-els Xek station.
The enemy are r>y .?rr?-d to b" strongly
intrench";; nr Iblomnkanr.
Advice- from M:if"king say u band of
armed Kalllrs l.fr Mr!' king, through
the burghers'tin; s. dm iny the night of
April o and were followed and .Mir-,
rounded in the bu-'i, where they w.-ro
shelled by a Maxim-'N >rdenfellt gun.
The Boers (lie:! stormed the KalTir jiosi- |
tion, killing 1J1. Tim Kailirs fought
stubbornly.
Skirmishes are reported at Biggarsberg
and in the Free State, mostly between
