From this the skeleton brnnches of slirnbsof various kinds protrnded, and the larger limlis of mimosas yet so bare that game conld be seen for a long distanco. The caravan had lately crossed a terrible desert, where tbo trail was lined with the skeletons of eainels and various animals that hud fallen by tho way, and the glimpse of living animals was so welcome that tho various crcatnres that wandered about the camp were unmolested. As they sat one morning resting they were astonished to see walking toward them u flock of black and white storks, common in toe country and to be seen everywhere sitting by the banks of the Nile watching for prey. The birds numbered twenty cr more and came gravely on. as if they wero a body of dignified embassadors intent on some mission of importance. They paid not tho slightest attention to the camp, but walked slowly by. When opposite to them, the travelers saw that upon the back of each stork perched a small bird abent as large as a robin. There seemed to be a perfect understanding between the steeds and their riders. Ordinarily a bird like the stork would have beeu annoyed by such a companion, but these walked calmly along with their little riders, who occasionally flew away and returned again. When the strange cavalcade passed near the camp, it was apparent that the storks were on n I)anting expedition and that the smaller birds had attached themselves to tho linnters evidently to eavo trouble in transportation. The storks were pick* ing np tho grasshoppers oat of tho itsbes. and if one by any chance escaped I heir watchful eyes or sharp beaks down pounced one of t lie copper colored riders ind seized it. retmuiug to the back of tho stork to devour it. To this the latter inado no objection, taking it all as it matter of course. And so the curious procession moved on, tho men in camp watching their strange actions until they had passed out of sight. This action on tho part of tho large bird in not only permitting another bird to ride on its back and pound its Feathers with grasshoppers in its attempts to devour them, suggests that there innst have been some understanding between the birds. The small bird might properly he considered an interloper, but from tho quiet manner in which the stork accepted tho situ>tiou it would appear that good fellowship prevailed among them, ria'tibn" among birds in tho south, though in this instance the smaller bird was evidently a robber. I first noticed it when drifting on a lagoon among the Florida keys. My boat was anchored to a coral bank, and I was lying down on tho little deck, looking down into the water, when n brown pelican came flying along, closely followed by a large gnll, which we termed tho laughing gnll, from its note, which was u decided ha 1 ha! many times repeated. Tho pelican, perceiving n school of small fish near my boat, roso a few feet, then dashed headlong among them. It I came up shaking its feathers and al lowing the water to drain from its ponderous pouch, in which were several fishes. The moment tho pelican rose tlio laughing gull swooped down und alighted on its head, and. leaning over just as tho pelican was about to swallow, deftly snatched one of the fish from its long bill and with n derisive laugh flew away, immediately returning to the pelican's back, where it apparently rested, while the large bird swam about, offering not tho slightest objection to tho rider. In this instance the act of the gnll | was certainly tin ft of tho most baroj faced character, yet the big pelican, ] which could have annihilated its rider, accepted tho situation in apparent good nature, so that the impression was created that tho two hunted together, and the pelican was content to share its spoils with the laughing gull.
