to attend a Sociable at their residence

The rains have made the ground
very wet, and roads are awful muddy
and people are complaining. Too
chain gang is doing a lot of work on
the roads that is not wor'h a cent
now, but only makes them worse.
Throwing dirt in the roads to raise
or ridge them, this time of year only
makes the mud deeper. The county
authorities may be intending all tight,
but we think they are missing it.

the burial of one of our oldest and

man; he died very suddenly?was in

least he makes a bale bring as much
as it did in good old times. He sold
a bale of cotton here weighing 020
lbs. It was ginned by Mr. Robt
Garner. Our Mr. Lerrell says that
it is the heaviest he has bought in
four years.
By the way madam rumor has it
that Mr. B. often visits Lock k hurt
for other purposes than selling cotton
or fishing cither.

Mi.-s Ella Davidson, who has been
a missionary to China for seven years
ami now at home for her health, will
give a lecture at Salem church on
the olst inst at 12 o'clock in. According
to the rules men will be excel
led and only women and small
children will be admitted. We bespeak
for her a full house. One-half
hour's talk from her will give our
people a bett< r idea of the missionary
work than they will learn in forty
years in the old way about which so
many of us care so little.
The C. E. Society met at 11. J.
Kirby's yesterday evening. A full
house attended.
Mr. F. M. Burr, an agent of the
P. O. Department was in this section
' last week looking after the mail
service. lie says the department intends
to give us the best possible
1 service. Certainty and security being
its object, to that end he is engaged
and is at work. The prcccnt admin|
istrathm intends to stop nothing short
of ubs< lute perfection if that end is
possible to be obtained. The gov'
eminent intends to hold riders and
1 mail contractors strictly to their
duties, and postmasters are required
; to report the kind of service they get
' and whether the riders are temperate
1 or trustworthy. This is fur in ad'
vance of any ruling ever taken by
. the department heretofore. Had
roads will be no excuse for failure if
" bad stock arc employed. This is ex(
actly what is wanted. It has come
t)a point where too much recklessness
' and irresponsibility enters into the
' mail service and professional bid.

A majority of Chairmen of the
Township boards of tho county met
in the Probate Judges' office January
2?rd, 1S99.
The meeting was organized by electing
G. B. Fowler Chairman, J. M.
Greer, Secretary.
After disposing of mention business.
The Chairman called for nomination,
for Chairman of county pension
board.
\V. T. Jeter was nominated and
unanimously elected.
G. B. Fowler was nominated for
Secretary and unanimously elected.
M. B. Lee and II. S. Porter were
nominated for members of the board
and unanimously elected.
On motion township bonrds were requested
to meet at their respective
places of meeting on the ISth, day of
February at 12 o'clock a. in. and revise
their pension rolls and pass upon
all new applications and forward same
to county board.
County Board of Pension will meet
in Union February 27th, at 11 o'clock
to pass upon all matters that may be
brought before it.
