tho court talked at length with the correspondent
of the Associated Press.
"I can't tell you," he Faid, "what
line of questioning was adopted, bui
tho court will lind I believo, that the
Maine was blown up by design, though
I don't think it will bo able to ascertain
exactly how. The court's finding will
be based on negative, rather than positive
evidence, lly this I mean that all
the testimony heard so far has, bit by
bit, of those who think the explosion
was of internal origin. This negative
evidence is so strong and so general
that L cau see no possibility of tho
court's deciding that the explosion was
internal.
"Tho only alternative then left for
tho court is to fall back ou evidence
which points to the intentioual blowing
up of tho Maine. This, 1 think, will
bo done, unless the court formulates a
theory of its own, or declares that it
does not know how the disaster occurred,

bodies is not understood by any
