THE SENATE*
14th Day.?In tho Senate a bill was
favorably reported from the Indian
committee, prohibiting railroad companies
from charging more than '! cents
a mile for passengers through Indian
Territory. A resolution was introduced
looking to tho tilteration of tho water
used iu the city of Washington having
been offered and referred to tho District
of Columbia Committee, Mr. Halo,
of Maine, said that iu no part of tho
United States was there a city whose
citizens wero so abused and imposed
upon as to tho wttter supply as aro tho
citizens of Wellington. "We are confronted
with bad, foul water," said ho,
"so filthy, indeed, as to make it dangerous
to drink and oven to tako a
batli." Tho Senate at 12:fi0 went inV>
oxccutivo session to consider the Hawuiiau
unuexation treaty.
15th Day. ?Except for a few minutes
given to a controversy over some minor
postoffice continuations, the entire time
of the executive session of the Senate
was consumed by Senator Davis, of
Miunesota, in a speech in support of
Hawuiiun annexation. Mr. Davis is
chairman of the Senato cowmittee on
foreign relations, and his speech was
generally acceptod us the semi-olhciul
utterance of tho mnjority of the committee.
He spoke for about two hours,
and when the Senate adjourned ho had
uot finished.
10th Day.?Sonator Davis completed
his speech in the executive session of
the Senate on tho Hawaiinn treaty, and
was followed by Senator Allen, ot Sobruska,
who spoko in opposition. Mr.
Davis' speech was devoted largely to a
presentation of the stategic features of
annexation. Ho displayed a chart in
front of the presiding officer's platform,
showing the location of Hawaii relative
to this couutry and Asia. Ono of the
points brought out with considerable
elaboration was tho probable effect on
the Nicarnguan canal of tho occupation
of the islands by some foreign powor.
Chandler introduced a resolution requesting
a list of the officers of the
army be furnished the b'onatc.
17th Day. ? In the Senate the pension
appropriation bill was placed on the
calendar. A resolution asking the
President for information about tho
protection of Americans in Cuba, was
read by Senator Cannon. The eulogies
in memory of tho lato Senator Isliani
(1. Harris, of Tennosseo, was postponed
until after the election of a Sonator by
tho Legislature of Tennessee. No great
progress was mude with tho Hawaiian
annexation treaty.
18th Day.?In the Senate Hoar, of
Massachusetts- nrekonteil Hin fnllnwinn
joint roHolutiou, which wan referred to
conimitteo ou privileges and elections:
"J'hatthe following article he proposed to
the Legislatures of tlio several Status as an
amendment to the constitution of the United
States: 'The term of nfllco of the President

Nineteen bills on tho pension calendar
was passed. Hutler, of North Carolina
secured the pnssago of a joint resolution
for monuments to Nash and I)nvidson,
the cost of euch to be 95,000.
Tho eulogies upon the late -Senator
Karlo.of South Carol in u, was postponed
on account of McLauriu's illnoss, to
some later day. Heuate then adjourned
until Monday.
THE HOUSE.
10th Day.?Tho opponents of the
civil servico law had much tho best of
tho debate iu the ilouso, so far as tlio
number of those engaging in it were
concerned. Sight of tho ten speakers
were of the opposition. The friends of
the law are very anxious to shut oil
further debate, and in this will have
the co-oporution of speaker Hood and
tho rules committee,
good children who had never brought
shame or gnof to their parents. This
is tho biggest and best thing i know of.

aro seeking to modify or repeal the
laAv, decided to let the debate eoino to
a close, but it required tho casting vote
of tho Speaker to accomplish this.

One of the items authorizing a
further expenditure of $ tfn.iHM) for tho
Soldiers' Homo at Dauville, 111., for
wlych $150,000 was appropriated m the
last sundry civil bill, was used by Mr.
DeArinond, of Missouri, Democrat, as
a basis for a bitter personal attack
upon Chairman Cannon, whose home
is in Hanville. Ho charged the
chairman of tho appropriation committee
of having used his powers and
position to secure tho location of too
home at Dnuvillo. Mr. Cannon in roply
branded Mr. DoArmond as a com
mon scold, who would have been
ducked under the town pump had he
lived in the old days. He 6aid he would
stand or fall on his record. The House,
by a vote of 12:1 to 74, sustained the ap|
propriation. There was also a lively debate
over the provision in the bill requiring
the owners of bullion hereafter
to pay the cost of transporting bullion
from essayists to mints.

Bessbrook and Newry, through
a rich farming district, makes a substantial
addition to its receipts by hauling
farm wagons over Its lines nttaetaed
to the motor car, in the place of the
^ trailer, which Is sometimes seen. In
( order to keep the wagons ou the track
, a second pair of rails is laid inside the
r working tracks and slightly higher.
The towns at either end of tlie line
are both market towns, and the line
runs directly to the business centers,
where the wagons are drawn aside and
run into their places by a half-dozen

each by the countryman for this service.
It is, therefore, possible for a
farmer to bring his produce to market
ami dispose of it without the aid of ids
horses. It is not an uncommon sight,

the motor ear on its way to market.
The farmers take kindly to tills
scheme, as It is a saving of money as
