Towneend, of Uuion, tas admitted W. II. Newbold, the lispens&ry constable who killed Mr. L'urner in Spartanburg county sevral weeks ago, to bail in the sum of F2,f>00. This appears to be very itnall bail for a person charged with he most rerious offence knowu to the aw; but "these are strange times, record-breaking times, and novel proceedings arc in order, and its all ight bo long as it is right. Several mouths ago some genleuen in North Carolina looted a bank ind weie admitted to hail in the sum jf $80,000. It would doubtless have ;one hard with Mr. Ncwbold had lie let fire to a barn or stolen ahoise; but Newbold is not that sort of lawbreaker. IIo only killed a man, an innocent man, and human life is so dieup in South Carolina. Arc there lot plenty of good men left in the State? Why should a faithful officer jf tho law, n representative of the najesty and dignity of the State, be lubjected to the inonctony and ineon- 1 lenience of imprisonment merely bc ause one innocent man perished at j is hands ? ' In the circumstances, we wonder hat Judge Townsend did not order Mr. Ncwbold's dischargo upon his >wn recognizance, and would suggest hat his couusel move for his unconlitioua! discharge on the ground of ixccssive bail."?News and Courier. Ordinarily we would agree with he News and Courier in its remarks >n Judge Townecnd, but this case we hink has some extenuating circumtanccs. In the first place Newbold vas not endeavoring to escape from he courts, but had given himself up i 'oluntarily, clearly showing that he 1 vas willing to stand trial. In the i icxt place New hold could not escape roin the clutches of the law if lie de irtd. Nature has so marked him, hat it would be an utter impossibilty for him to cscspc. The case is a totorious one, and a dreadful one, >ut one in which we believe the ouits will do their full duty, but we lave doubts as to anything ever bong.done to Newbold.
