making an effort to have the Mayors
ami Inteiulants of tho different towns
and cities meet in that city in convention
in May, during tho May Festival
at Converse College. The following is
tho letter to tho Mayors:
Dear Sir:?It has occurrod to me
that a convention of Mayors aud Intoudants
of the cities and towns of tho
State would bo of great interest and
mutual advantage, and to this end I
write you extending an invitation to
moot, in the city of Spartanburg on May
5th, 181)7.
I am convinced that a mooting such
as 1 have suggested, would be beuoilcial
and profitable, as an exchange of
views on tho munv matters of municipal
interest wouhl certainly prove valuable
and instructive.
I ask that you reply at your very
earliest convenience saying whether or
not you will attend, and offering any
suggestions that may occur to you. I
earnestly request your co-operutiou in
this matter and trust that it will meet
with your approval and that you will
give mo your assistance in perfecting
arrangements such as will insure a
largely attended and successful meeting.
You will kindly give this matter your
immediate attention and let me near

Bryan figured sensationally and extensively
in the court of common pleas,
and at one time a personal encounter
between himself and Capt. A. Blythe
was very imminent. Tlio difficulty was
brought about through hot words boiwnnn

examining Blythe ou the stand. Bryan
was being sued l>y Whitner Syinuies
over the ownership of ? certain note
for some $7/50 ami was questioning witness
quite acrimoniously during which
Blythe insinuated that Bryan bored
him, whereupon Bryan flew into a passion
ami reminded him, Blytho, in the
United States Court some years ago for
friendship only. The men faced each
other augrily, and a moment more
1 would very likely have seen them mixing,
but Judge (Jury threw cold water
on the proceedings by ordoring Bryan
under arrest. As the sheriff sturted up
to execute the order Bryan apologized
to the court. Capt. Blythe then told
Bryan he would "see linn outside" for
attacking him under protection of the
court. Cooler heads prevailed on
Blythe to let tlio matter drop, and thus
it ended.
Twenty-five new physicians and five
pharmacists graduated from the South
Curolina Medical college at Charleston
lust week.

tho Registor, can generally bo had by
examining the nmount of privilogo tax
paid. Taking tliut us a basis it may be
predicted tliut one of the biggest crops
in recent years is to be planted this
year. From tho State Treasurer's book
it is shown that the sum of $f>U, 154.08
bus been paid since January 1 to date.
East yoar from November 1 to March
2(1, 1898, the amount was $47,72.1.97.
Thon the fiscal year began in November
and calculations are innde from that
month. From November toJanuary 1,
1 Him;, the nmount collected was about
$9,000. This shows that tho receipts
from January 1, 1897, to dato exceed
those for tho snnto period last yenr by
over $0,000. About $200 was receivoa
on this account Saturday, but Clerk
Zimmerman, who keeps tho accounts,
says that iflqilito a falling off, indicating
tliut most of the purchases have
been made. As all this goes to Clemson
she won't have to worry about her
income this year.

Kail road was anxious to roach the progporous
manufacturing towns of Piedmont
and Pel/or, and the adjacent nice
territory. Also that these towns are
equally anxious for an outlet over this

mooting of tho citizens was hold recent
ly to take steps towards securing the
passage of this connection .trough
Laurens, and a committee of prominent
men have been appointed to inv stignte
the matter.

Miss Lulu Slovens, daughter of George
Stovens, the well-known blacksmith, of Gasport,
Niagara. County, New York, has surprised
her neighbors oonsidorably, by not
dying live months ago, when the physlolans
Bivitl she could not live.

young womau, who is very well known, on
account of her musical ability. Lad beeu.a
very healthy girl, until about one year ago,
when she began to fail, and grew so pale
and apparently bloodless and so weak that
after a few months she was givon up to die.

at Gasport met Miss Stevens, and seeing her
emaciated condition, and hearing from the
