A SAD MISTAKE.
The other night one of our esteemed
fellow citizens was aroused from slumbers
sweet by a loud commotion in his
liaek yard. He lias a pet rail' which has
the run of the yard. The noise was suggestive
of dogs, ami their victim so iucl
to l>e the youthful Imviue. Becoming
exceeding wroth at the nnctural disturle
ance. our citizen grabbed his shot gun
and sallieil forth to expel the intruders.
It was a very dark night. There seemed
to bean impromptu steeple-chase in progress,
open to all ages, go-as-you-please.
Around and around the yard they went.
It was hard to select a mark, but a whita
si>ot attracted his attention. ami lie let
go. A loud "Ba-a-a" followed, .lust
then he remoinltered that his calf was
hlazc-faceil, and exclahmsl "well I have
played it!" The dogs escaped. At least
no canine survivor remained upon the
tield. The calf was not killed, but its
organs of vision were rendered exceedingly
defective, and now the owner is
looking for a pair of glass calf's eyes.
Hut the result is a quiet neighborhood.
