world. On the two transcontinental lines
running into this city not a train, freight or
passenger, hns departed within twenty-four
hours. This remarkable state of affairs is due
to floods and storms. It has rained incessantly
for ten days ltivers ami small streams
are swollen beyond their banks, and in many
cases the water is still rising, ltcpof is from
thesouthern part of the State are that theCow- i
litz had risen al?ove the highest water murk j
in its history and that Castle ltoek, a town
of 500 inhabitants in Cowlitz eouuty, is en-;
tirely covered by witter from ouo to three .
feet deep. A strong current has set in there I

their foundations. Chehalis reports the storm j
the worst of the season in that locality. Elec- |
trie light wires ure down, trees uprotted and
fences and small buildings blown down. The J
storm here was the worst since last winter.
All that portion of the Great Northern sys- I
tem from tne Cascades west, including the |
Const J.luo is paralyzed. On the Coast Line !
about three-quarters of r. mile of tracks has
been washed out, and other serious dumugo
has resulted iu the Cascades, where the main
line crosses the Hkycomish river four times
within a distance of two miles. The railroad
bridges are washed out in this locality
and much trackage is iuuudutcd where the
roadbed follows the river. The railroad !
bridge over tile White ltivor has been eou- j
tlcmucd as unsafe owing to high waters,
which are expected to sweep away the structure
at any moment, and this lias cut nil com- I
niuuication with the Northern l'ucifle and
likewise stopped traille on the Columbia
and Pugot Sound railway.

chamber of commerco was held in New York
last week at Delmonico's, and among the I
376 guests were the most prominent professional
and comercial men of the country, as
well as distinguished statesmen and politicians.

in the banquets of the chamber of
commerce has afforded me in the past and
the kindly feeling and broad spirit of enterprises

gather arouud the chamber's hospituble
board tomorrow evening.

a knock-out blow Tuesday, when the committee,

stock pooled, refused to turn it over to tho ;
llyan syndicate, headed by Mr. Thomas E. J
Ryan, of New Nork. The decision was a 1
