DEADLY MOJAVE VALLEY.
In the Heartof California Surrounded
by Mines.
There is a movement on foot among
the Red Cross people to prevent the
awful destruction of life which goes
on every year in the Mojave desert.
This is a great tract of land in the
heart of the gold fields of California.
All around it lio the richest veins of
gold and silver, of borax and other
useful minerals that have been found,
and, |lying perilously within tliesi
Eldorados of fortune and fame tin
desert, across which prospectors must
go to seek for wealth.
If they take a circuitous path
around the desert they traverse onh
the well worn ways, and have les.

The return was made hy a more
Northern path, but unsuccessful; and

the trail. For miles at a time the
stage would not halt, for the ground
was smooth and fair: and then an

It is unsafe to sleep during the
very strong heat, for the animals may
become maddened by the sun and
dish out their brains. Or the sun
in ?y slant and creep under the canopy
aid burn the sleeper hopelessly.
Neither is it safe to bathe in the burning
sun, for terrible water blisters
will rise almost instantly upon the
moist skin.
Humanitarians who have at heart
the follies as well as the virtues ol
mankind, their necessities as well u.thoir
avarice, have seriously consider

the Mojave travelors can get suppliesbefore
starting out, stations where
water and water hags, food and propet
raiment are sold cheap, far below
