Tiie proprietors of manv hotels, theaters

SILVKPi AND (iOLD. .
ttreat is the agitation on this subject.
Many men. with limited ideas on the
principles of government, have made a
hoiihy of this question and consider it
of more imi?ortan<v tlian ail others combined.
The financial department is only
one of the factors in any government.
I low silver shall 1h> coined and used is
only a side question and does not touch
the foundation principles of government.
It would le possible to do without either
gold or silver as coined money. Jtoth
could not be eliminated without paialyzing
trade.
Sentiment is on the sale of silver. It
has always been used as money in all
countries where they had silver. Tho
people arc now clamorous for it to l?o
placed on an equality with gold. The
average man lielicvcs and teaches that,
the free coinage of silver on the lti to I
ratio. \v< uld end all our financial troubles
turn money loose by the wagon load, reduce
wall street end all other commercial
centres to lteggsrx and put the i>oor
man on top of a great wave of pr? spcrity*
The mere coinage of silver on this Kisis
would bring little lienefit to the people
generally. If millions were coined eveiy
month, these dollars would drop into the
1 Markets of those who had something to
give for them. Three-fourths of the
families of theeouutry make only a living.
That is all they would make if there was
enough money of some sort issued to
give S-ioO.on instead of S'Jo.OO to each
inhabitant of the country. In our complex
business lelations. 1 milkers, corporations,
note shave is, middle men, dealers
in stocks and bonds are a necessity.
If values of coin and paper money are
disturbed z: :>.s-to lie unequal, these saute .r ^
wall street men wouliT TiiiX^* a
picnic. They always thrive and flourish
when values are rapidly changing.
While personally w e are in favor of
placing tin? two metals on an equality,
so far as Hie law is concerned, we <lo not
see i iow the mass of people is to receive
!!: I enelii they expect. If n great tidal
\\a\r of anarchy should swecj over the
country ami make a division of property,
(oatiseale ( ver\ tiling owned by the rieli
men. it would not be tea years before
the poor man weald In- on tlie bottom
again, poorer than ever. Where men
are taught to depend on auithing for a
living, or the aeemnulatiou of properly,
besides iheir ov. n honest enileavor, they
e.re \\\ akeued in propoi lion hi the trust
they place in outside rendition:-'.
We would iil.e to see the two metal*
trim side by side on any arbitrary ratio.
It would an excellent object lesson to
see the fuels, actual potential facts, take,
the plr.ee of unending arguments, which
have Urn given without si tiling anything.
if the change means prosperity
for ail. let it c ane and that in a hnrrj.
if it I rings, the deluge, let it also conic,
for there are certain eonditons of soeict>*
dial ran be pe.ritiixl and made endurable,
only liy the el'-ausing power of a deluge.
