liIMPORT OFCRAND JURY.
State of South Carolina.
County of Union.
Court of General Sessions.
To his honor, D. A. Townsend
presiding Judge: Having discharged
the duty devovlcd upon us by your
honor for the March term of Court
for Union County. We the (Jranu
Jury of said County desire to make
through our foreman the following
presentment and recommendations.
M u V A 11 I II I I K ' i lliv; i'ltlOUi O Willi u
anil found it noatlv anil well kept in
every particular ami the bond lbr
$10,000. sale.
We examined the School Commissioner's
office anil found it not well
kept and books improperly kept.
The Commi.-sionor says lie had measles
in his family and had not been in
his office enough to get it in good
condition but would have it in first
class order by the July term; and we
found bis bond for ftohOO safe.
We examined the Judge of Probate's
office and found it well kept and that
lie needs a safe or a vault to keep
the records in, as be lias none, if a
vault is built it can be used by him
and the Auditor and we recommend
that it be done, also that lie or the
proper authority be ordered to furnish
iiim stationery for bis office. His
bond is safe.
We examined the Sheriff's office
and books and find them well kept
and his office neat and dean. His
bond is good.
Wo recommend that the window
in the JSherilFs office bo cut down in
order that it will be more comfortable
to the Sheriff and the people with
whom he has business and that some
shelves be put in his office to hold his
books, as many as are necessary.
We examined the Jail carefully
and find in needs considerable repairs.
The window shutters should he taken
off from the inside of the Jail and
put on the outside. The blankets
and beddi ng are insufficient for comfort.
Also that the windows on the north
side of the Jail be raised in middle to
prevent water from running in when
the wind blows. We also lvcomnu ml
the heater be improved so as to furnish
more beat. \\ e also recommend that
the jail he enclosed by a plunk fence
ton feet high. The preccedmg <Iran 1
Jury have nnnle the same sort id
recommendation ami no attention has
been paid to it.
Also that a sewerage system he
provided for the jail as it i> necessary
for the health ol tli3 prisoners.
We further recommend lit;.' the
town conned < ! I nio:i 1> m i I: ?
build a guard h 'ti e or ealah ? ?<? to
|>11L their prisoners in instead of pn
tii??? them in the County jail an 1
using the ('utility lied dm;;.
We recommend that three more
water closets he built near those
a!reailv Imi!:.
We examined the Auditor's oiiiee
and found boohs ami oiiiee well Kept,
and after examining the returns we
i i 11 d ipiite a lot of projie:;, ..v.. ieturncd
and a good deal more prop i: v

we recommend the eipiali/.aiion j. v.id

We examined the ''ierh s ??!".iv-t?

Weaxamiiio 1 the County Treasurer's

This is about all the information we j
can give on account of not finding :
Mr. JScott. There is one little orphan i
there that should he attended to, and j
\vc hope your honor will order it done.
It eonics to our knowledge that
the liiee bridge over fair forest between
here ami (Jlenn Springs is in
a bad fix, dangerous, and the roads
generally over the County arc had.
The flat at llodgors bridge is rotten
and unsafe and the keeper or ferryman
is frequently absent and people
frequently go there and wait an hour
or two and have to go awav without
crossing.
Several Trial .Justices have not
brought their hooks ami we did not
examine the few that were brought.
\? e respectfully request an order ;
from the court ;br authority to allow |

We thank your honor for courtesies

own County men to preside in such
an efficient and equitable manner,
and we found our duties easy to be
performed liom the explicit directions
given in your charge.
