The Average American may not know
' much about national finance, but these
bond issues to keep up a gold standard,
have taught him a good deal about the
national financiers.
The Post Otlice has been reopened at
GrinduM Shoals with Mr. J. W. Nance
as Post Muster. It was opened about
the firtst Feb. llefore that tiidb there
had been no jnxst otlice there for alxiut
eight montiis, the otlice having been dosed
when Mr. J. W. Eison, tlie former
poet huwter niovetl away, last year. Mr.
J. W. N nice has had a store at Urindall
since last fall, and it was mainly through
his influence, that the post otlice was reopened.
It will lie a considerable convenience
and the Grindall Shoals people
are to lie congratulated on the reoi?cning
of their post otlice.

A sad and somewhat remarkable killing
occurred, in Columbia last Monday.
It was at the Congaree Mills. Little
James Miller, alxnit twelve yearn of agegot
in a difficulty with his play mote,
George Deinates, about the same age and
threw a piece of iron at him from a distance
of thirty feet and killed him. The
piece of iron weighed about half a |>ound.
It struck Denudes on the heart, paralyzing
that organ, and causing instant
death. Several members of both families
witnessed the scene, among them being
1 the mother of young Denudes, who was
within a few feet of her son when he
- was struck dead.
The admininistration has Urn ''catching
it" again. This tjme secretary of
Agriculture. Morton was the subject.
f)uring the discussion in the House on
the agricultural appropriation bill he was
quite severely scorn i oy some, a no criticised
by several. AV hen someone arose ,
and asked if there was not someone,
Democrat, Populist, or Republican, who
would raise a voice in bis [defense, it is ,
said that the question was greeted by a
chorus of "noes." Surely the lines are
falling to the present administration in
hard places. Rut our president preserves
bis coniposure'and will continue to do so
as long as wild ducks aliound and bis
game leg allows him to pursue them.
Th*re is a bill liefore the Legislature
to refund to Governor Kvans the
which he.borrowed and advanced in Ik*lialf
of the State to make a creditable ex
liilht for South Carolina at the Atlanta
J?*Xf)ds?tton, and strange to stay it has
j^Hyyked a fight. Some of those who
opiKxse the l*ill say that It is unconstitutional.
AVe have not given that phase of
the question very close study, but we cannot
help thinking that it will reflect great
discredit on the State if we refuse to as
some the.debt. It was an o]M>n transaction
for the In-nefit of the State, and the
only available method at the time for
procuring a creditable exhibit at the Fair,
and we arc sure that those who saw our 1
exhibit by the side of those of our sister
states will agree that the money was well
used. AVe lielieve that a majority of the
people will lie much chagrinned if this
bill fails to pass.
Free silver prows stronger ami stronger
in spite of the fuel that the gold men wen*
declaring last fall that it was dead and
dead forever. It is apparent now that
the main issue in the next campaign will
be on the money question. It is the one
great issue liefore the American |>eoplc,
a question which divides the people more
definitely than any," or all others. It is
causing splits in both Democratic and
Itepublieau ranks that have solidly met
every issue that has 110011 presented since
the war. The party lash was very ^overfill
on the tariff, and election laws, and
other public questions, hut on this new
issue it seems to 1m* utterly useless.
The truth is that the people have lieen
trilled with until they have grown tired of
it. They will take 110 more ambiguous
and doubtful nroiuisos. Ksnocinllv mi.
they tin-d of lteintf (old that it would not
>H' tin* lies!, for them to have what tliey
want, free silver, and that something else
tojwit, the gold standard, would in* IH'tter

The {h>1 iticians may as well submit to
the inevitable. The people want free silver,
and the people are supreme.

A STUDY OF FUNERAL DIRECTORS.
Dignity, Euphemism*. Avocations and
Hopes of Up to Date Undertakers.
Although tho word "undertaker"
is n manifest ouphomism meant to
hide the nature of the trade for
which it stands, tho undertakers
long ago sought further to disguise

Nobody but a paupor is now

Tho u:. lertakers of this town as a
class arc an interesting, if somewhat
grisly, subject of study. Nobody
who has really known an undertaker
can doubt tho truth and realism of
tho gravodiggors' talk in "Hamlet."
Tho modern funoral director of this
town is not n gravodiggor, but ho is
a man of small roticcnco touching
subjopts that most men prefer to
avoid. Ho has become calloused by
use of such things, and ho has an
unploaaant way of dwolling upon
certain details of his profession, as
hod Bhakor.poaro's gravodiggors.
