t -It clocs uot seem possible to blow out
a candle through a brickbat, yet tbose
who Lave tried it say it can be done.
Most rooms are largely ventilated
through their walls, and the brick and
mortar are merely very rudimentary
lungs, whlcli take in and throw out
the atmosphere with hut little hindrance.
You may try the cxpiremcut
yourself. I'lace a candle on the other
side of your brick and use two funnels,
with the flaring ends on the opposite
side of the brickbat, with the small
end of one in line with your mouth und
the other turned on the cutidle flame.
The least breath will make the light
flicker and a hearty expiration will
extinguish It altogether. Try it and

A Memorlul PrfHt-ntcd to the Leglalaturo.
The following memorial in regard to

of liquor as a boverago aud tho protit

placed ou the desk of the members of
the legislature:
Tho memorial of the Gospel Temitornnnn

spectfully present to tho general assembly
of South Carolina that it is an '
organization composed of citizens of
tho State, having for its object the suppression
of the liquor traffic. In pursuance
of this object the executive
committee of thin organization have
hud prepared n bill to ameud certain
sections of the existing dispensary law,
which in now before both houses of
the geueral assembly for your consideration.
These niuendineutK propose to elituiuate
any profit further tbau necessary
to enforce the stum ; and further
eliminate the dispensing of intoxicating
liquora as a beverage, so that they
shall ho sold only for medicinal, uiu- (
ehanieal, scientific and sacramental
uses. I
These amendments represent tho
wishes nl'the Gospel Temperance union
j of South Carolina and the Christian
; sentiment of the State,
j Wo make this appeal for their adopi
tion for the reasons following:
I I* These amendmentsaresueh as will i
put the dispensary law in lasting favor
, with the best and most lawabiding poo- ^
I pie of our State.
II. The law, as amended, will have !
] tho lieui ty support in its enforcement!,

of sobriety.
31 F. It will allay tlio discontent of r
j prohibitionists ami others it' iutoxieutlug
liquors are no longer sold ?k a v
beverage, as there are many who thiuk I
the State has no right to sell it as a f
beverage. t
IV. If such amendments are adopted
no will unite the good people of the
j Stuto in giving their moral support to ^
the enforcement of the law, the illicit
sales will necessarily lie deceased.
Such changes will in no wise affect the ,
provisions of tlio act regardiug its enlorcement,
all sueli provisions remain- 4
ing in full effect.
V. The sale of liquors will then ho | (
nmch or more under the con'rol of the ! ?
State than it could possibly he otherwise,
inasniueh as good or better men f
could he secured to net as oflicers in v
the dispensary, ami 110 etiureh eouhl | f
refuso to keep a member in good j j
standing who held such an oilier, 1 ^
w hich is not tlio ease now. |
VI. As the net now stands we find
the t-'tuto with a law under which no f
consistent church member can accept ]
au oflice, and an institution of theState (
upon which he cannot invoke God's c
