The following memorial in regard to tho bill recently introduced in both houses of tho goneral assembly, look ing to tho amondiuent of tho dispouBary law so as to <lo away with the use of liquor as a boverago aud tho protit feature of tho present system has been placed ou the desk of the members of the legislature: Tho memorial of the Gospel Temitornnnn n?fA*? ^*" ^ 1 * ^fvawMw uuiv/i4 ui uu'iiii vuruiiuii XU* j spectfully present to tho general assembly of South Carolina that it is an ' organization composed of citizens of tho State,having for its object the suppression of the liquor traffic. In pursuance of this object the executive committee of thin organization have hud prepared n bill to ameud certain sections of the existing dispensary law, which in now before both houses of the geueral assembly for your consideration. These niuendineutK propose to elituiuate any profit further tbau necessary to enforce the stum ; and further eliminate the dispensing of intoxicating liquora as a beverage, so that they shall ho sold only for medicinal, uiu- ( ehanieal, scientific and sacramental uses. I These amendments represent tho wishes nl'the Gospel Temperance union j of South Carolina and the Christian ; sentiment of the State, j Wo make this appeal for their adopi tion for the reasons following: I I* These amendmentsaresueh as will i put the dispensary law in lasting favor , with the best and most lawabiding poo- ^ I pie of our State. Tho eutire State hua only 30,170 Bquaru miles, of which the Second circuit has over one-lifth. Oue-eighth of the urea of the State, or the proper average for each of the eight circuits is 3,771 square miles, or 2,512 less than tho urcu of the present Second circuit. Second, uh to population?Aiken county has 31,822, Burnwell county lias 44,(5]3, Beaufort county has 34,119, Colleton county lias 40,293, Hamilton county has 20,544; total 171,391. The population of the State is 1,151,149, of which the Second circuit ioutains over one-seventh. Oue-eighth if the population is 143,893, or 27,189 lesa than the population of tho Second circuit.
