May Women Preach? c?
f to
Memphis, Dec. 8.?The question o1 j
women preachers was ruled on in ^
the Mississippi Methodist Conference
South, in session in Yazoo City ves rc
terday. Presiding Elder Wecms of pc
the Vicksburg district reported that |n
Rev. Mr. Grimes invited Mrs. Mollie W(
71/cGce Snell, the evangelist, to assist
in conducting a revival. When
the presiding elder desired the engngement
cancelled, Grimes stated j-0
God would break his neck if he inter ul
fered with women preachers. Rishop
Duncan ruled emphatically that the
Methodist church did not recognize Q(
the right of women to preach, but
adheres to the doctrine of St. Paul on
the subject. Considerable feeling ^
has been aroused on the question in
il/ississippi and Tennessee, many j#
laymen taking issue with the bishop.

ELECTRIC LIGHTS
AND
WATER WORKS.
rh? Committee Reports And Bioommenda
Both Enterpriser The Town To Bo
Bonded. $10,000
Thore was another enthusiastic
neeting of the citizens in the court
touse last Friday night to talk about
Water Works. It was the occasion
>t the report of the committee up*
minted at the preceding meeting to
nakc a thorough investigation of the
rhole matter. The enthusiasm was
fluch increased by the incorporation
n the report on WaterWorks are 1
>ort on Electric Lights for the town,
'he committee had generously and '
risely investigated this subject along
imi lue oilier ana their report, with 1
lie eBtimations of the engineers con- |
alted, comprehended both enter- (
rises. The dispatch with which the
ommittee had done its work left J
s no time to become indifferent,
ven if there had been any tendency *
i that direction, but the fact is,. t
lat there is a remarkably unanimous t
jjgressiveness, and the citizens vie ^
ith the committee in their readi2ss
to do what they can.
The meeting was called to order at
30 by Mr. J. A. Fant, chairman,
ho stated that the object of the
eeting was to hear the report of the ?
mmittee, Mr. T. C. Duncan, as
airman and speaker of the commit- jj
e was called upon to report, where?on
he took the floor, and as the T
mmittee had not prepared any j/.
iten report, gave from memory ^
e results of their investigation,
lie said that two engineers had 'l
en consulted and had gone over the ^
vc. Two estimates w as the result;
2 one based on the present actual n
sessitv, the other on *)>e ,u
jrWJu,!aftKl development of l4jjV
le latter alone deserved cons id era * f c
n, as it would be throwing away
mcy to putin an inadequate system
it would have to be torn up in a
ar or two and replaced by a more
equate one. That the insurance
:n too, had assured them that the T
eaper system would not justify the
iriff Association in reducing their p
:es. The second estimate based
the demands of the future would
3t in the neighborhood of #30.000. A
6rst classsystem of electric lights {};
tb forty arc and 1000 incandcsotburners
would cost about SI 0,000
iking a total lor Water Works and :V
ectric Lights of #40,000.00.
lie said that the more the coniittee
had studied the matter, the 1
ore thoroughly had they become :
nvinced of the utility and economy !*
both water works and electric lights ;j!
We would have to have them in a
ar or two anyway, and that now
is an opportune time, because they P
uld be put in oheaper just now
an later on. lie itemized the cast ^

0 enterprises and showed that the
ccipts would almost pay the ex n
mses after the first year, and that C(
the course of three or four years 1"
)uld probably be a paying investcnt.
n
Someone asked what the water ['
juld cost. Mr. Duncan said that
r ordinary family use it would prob
>ly be about six dollars a cock per a
jar, but the price would vary with
c amount of water used, lie had u
> doubt that at this low rate nearly V
1 the families on Factory llill would "
itronizc the Water Works, as the *
me saved and the convenience
ould be worth more than six dol a
rs a year to them. Of course it 1
ould be pretty generally patronize*!
1 over town. _
The cost to individuals of electric ^
ghts would be about a dollar a
onth for incondescent light. He had i!
3 doubt but that would act a liberal 1
iitrouagc also, us has been the ease ,
ith the telephone.
He said that the effect on insnr
rice had also been considered. 1
ad been learned from a rcliabl (
rurce that if a cheap system < i !
later Works were put in it won! .
ot lessen the rale of insurance, an
irtherinoro if the town eo. tinned *
row and did not put in Water Work
ic present rates would be raiser '
hit by building the proposed syst. r 1
ic rates would be reduced consider .
bly. enough to save the propeit; ,
wners in the neighborhood of t\\
aousand dollars.
Someone asked how long it wont t '
akc to construct the system. Tbj
reply was, * About six or seven months i
from the commencement of work."
When Mr. Duncan had finished
Mr. E. Nicholson, who is also a <
member of the committcee, sumra- *
ed up the whole by saying that the
water works and electric lights would *
increase the tax levy only about five
mills and that would probably be reduced
in the course of a few years.
2'he committee recommended that
the town be bonded in the sum
of forty Thousand Dollars for the
construction of Water Works and
Electric Lights systems.
Mr. Wm. A. Nicholson addressed
the chair and said that he was highly ti
pleased with the report of the com- e:
mittee and he moved that the facts tt
presented by the committee be print* ti
and circulated freely among the 01

Legislature for authority to bond the al
own, they could act with intelligence w
n the matter. On request, however
his motion was withdrawn for the G

Mr. L- G. Young moves that it is ai
lie sentiment of the meeting that tli
he town bond itself iu the sum of te

IKorks and Electric Lights. The
notion prevails. st
Mr. Nicholson renews his motion to

This has been an abundant harvest ?
ear in South Carolina and the farters
may be said to have been blessed,
'he year was in strange contrast
ith the proceeding one, particularly
* prices have been so much better
>r larm products.
During the year just closed, while
te oflicis.l figures are not yet at hand lf1
le estimate by competent authority at
i that the corn crop has been the
irgcst ever harvested in this State,
he total crop is estimated at 2000,000
bushels. The average yield
cr acre has been 15bushels, against ]0
2J last year. The largest previous arl
?rn crop was about 17,000,000 (jj
ushels. j. j1
It is estimated a/so that the State
us furnished to the markets of the fi
orld this year 038,148 bales of />tton,
the aveingc bale being 450
tmnds. The acreage in cotton . '
uring the year just closing is estilated
at 1,057,000. The prices
aid for the crop arc pretty generally
nown. It is thought that the average
rice per pound will work out to be e\

# v, vv..w f a
Besides all this, grain crops were
nuMially fine the past year, and so J
as the tobacco crop, the lattor bringug
excellent prices. Again the
mokehouses of the State have been fn
lied with sufficient hog and hominy b<
nd like products, it is said, to feed
he entire State for two years.
It may be addedal o that South
Carolina has never had a better fruit ,
rop year than this has been. The
iuitwasofan unusual fine quality
nd there was an abundance of it,
(ringing good prices in the northern
markets. This is true also of the ^
nelon crop. v
So taking things in all South Cur>lina
