Minnesota may lose its claim to the
titlo of the Lake state. A purvey tea

Nenrly all the rest have greatly shrunk
in area. Only the larger lakes remain.

degreo, have been observed in the Dakotns.
There were inuuy large lakes
in those States ten years ago, some of
tbem miles in extent. But nearly all
of them have now disappeared, their
ancient beds turned into fields, and
such us remain are sunk to sloughs or
pools in great wastes of reedy mud.

waters are the dimiuished rainfall of
the past decade and the more extend"
ed cultivation of the soil, which has
al)sorbed the moisture which would
