* i. I i T HE UNION TIMES -?1 ?? Present indications arc that there will be a great dearth of rentable houses hero this fall and winter unless tsomcouo * goes to building. It is a good sigu when a'.l the rentable houses iu a tjwu are occupied. Nevertheless, people wou't couio here to live uulesa they can Gud houses to live in. It would be a good time for some man who has the money and the land to build several substantial houses to rent. It does not pay to build hoc or gandy houses to rent, but there is good prolit iu plain substantial ones. Lot no family be turned away from Uuion for want of a suitable house to live in. Mr. Smoak's idea that the courts ought to exclude youug men and boys when cerfiiu oases of gross immorality are being tried, except those that take part in the trial; and that the publication of the facts ill such cases should ho lor bidden, is a good one. As a rule trials ought to be and will be public, iu a free country, but there aro certaiu rnisde uieanors, in the nature of a nuisauee, the trial nf which, attended an they always are by crowds of young men and boys, with the evidence of witnesses i.ircef, and under cro<>s examination, repeated and oonnncntcd on bv counsel, is a greater barm and a bigger nuisnuee than the continuance of tiro ofTenee would b'\ One of tbo Judges has recngnixed the evils of these trials and last year charged a grand jury hereto bring in no indietmeuts for a certain offence unless it wav amounting to :i nuisance. - * * To our own County Supervisor, Mr. J. H. T. Scott is due the credit of starting the movotneni which has resulted in the calling of the road congress to meet in Columbia on she 24th insf# Mr. Scott has been interested in the matter of good roaus for some time, and bis po eition as supervisor lias doubtless cnah lei him the better to appreciate the road problem. He first wrote to several supervisors about the matter and found out that those who, like himself, had been brought face to face with the duty of in Hiding bad ro ids, wore all agreed "Tbal it was no small job; that it was a big enough problem, in fart, t> engage the joint deliberations of ail the supervisors in the up country. These letters were followed by a coinmunicatitin written by Mr. Scott and published in Mcvcrnl of our stito daily pipers, calling for a meeting of ail tho Supervisors at Columbia. It was at tho suggestion of Thr Stuti: wo believe that the meeting was called n road congress and that the invitation to attend was extended to nil th*sc interested in good roads. We are glad to sec this in ivement and hope that our supervisors, and people generally, will push this matter and keep on pushing it until we have good roads B'l over eur st it o. Lot us not, however, expect too much c>f a convention. We might he disa ?pointed and disappointment nearly alw iys discourages. We arc expecting much of the convention?that plans and processes will he discussed and critieisni a,nd the host methods ascertained. One tiling is cert tin, however, and that is, that it is either going to take a good dual of work, or a good deal of money probably both, to fix our roads like they ought to bo lixeJ. II the roads can be fixed easiest and best with hbor-s.iv ing machinery, then we may depend on it, it will cost something to woi k tlx m.
