Governor Evans says that the dispensary

it has not yet been placed to the gen

A dispatch from Columbia Bays : A i ^
few dnyH ago the stato authoriticR began
to apply to ox-liquor dealers nsec- (

provides that a circuit judge can enjoin c'
any man from selling liquor and, in
case he violates it, permitting him to
be jerked up for contempt of court ; 11
that the judge can theu, on almostany
kind of a showing, declare him guilty P

doing away with the constitutional
right of a trial by jury, which ip guaranteed

P. W. Edward?, of Lansingburgb. was pro#*

bas entailed on biru peculiar and serious j
consequences. At the present writing Mr. E. I
is a prominent officer of Test Lyon, G. A. lt.f j
Colioes. and a past aid do camp on the staff
of the commander-in-chief of Albany Co. In
tbo interview with a reporter be saJd:
"I was wounded and sent to tbo hospital
nt Winchester. They sent me, together with
others, to Washington?a ride of about 100
mile?. Having no room in the box cars wo
were placed face up on tbo bottom of flat
cars. The sun boat down upon our unprotected
beads. When 1 reached Washington
I was insensible and was unconscious for ten
days while in the hospital. An abscess guth? ;
ered in my ear and broke; it has been gathering
and breaking ever since. The result j
of this 100 mile ride and sunstroke was heart
disease, nervous prostration, insomnia and j
rheumatism; a completely shattered system
which gave me no rest night or day. As a
last report I took some Pink Pills and they
helped me to a wonderful degree. My rheumatism
is gene, my heart failure, dyspepsia
and constipation are about gone, and the abscess
in my ear has stopped discharging and
my head feels as clear us a bell, when before
it felt as though it would burst, and my onco
shattered nervous system is now nearly
sound. Look at those fingers," Mr. Edwards
suid. "do they kok as it there was any rheumatism
there.'" He moved his fingers rapidly
and freely and strode about the room like
a young boy. "A year ago those fingers wore
gnarled at the joint* and so stiff that I could
not hold a pen. My knees would swell up
and I could not straighten mv legs out. My
joints would squeak when I moved them.
That is the living truth.
"When 1 came to think that I was going i
to be crippled with rheumatism, together I
with the rest of my ailments, 1 tell you life
seemed not worth living. I suffered from
despondency. I cannot begin to tell you."
said Mr. Edwards, as he drew a long breath,
"what my leeling is at present. I think if
you lifted ten years right off my life and left
me prime and vigorous at fortv-seveD, I
could feel no better I was an old man and
could only drag myself painfully about the
house. Now I enn walk off without any

Edwards. ''would be sumcient to give me
cause for rejoicing, but when you come to
consider that I am no longer what you
might call nervous, and that my heart is apparently
nearly healthy, and that I can sleep
nights, you may realize why I may appear to
speak in extravagant praise of Pink Pills.
These pills quiet my nerves, take thut awful
depression from my head and at the same
time enrich mv blood. There seemed to ba
no circulation in my lower limbs a year ago,
my legs being cold and clammy at times.
Now the circulation there is as full and as
brisk as at any other part of my body. 1
used to be so light-headed and dizzy from
my nervous disorder that 1 frequently fell
while crossing the floor of my hou?e. Spring

Before the sun had set. pistols were
cracking at a rapid rate on one of the
principal streets of the city?Ciervais
street?and Slieppard was being carried
to tire state prison with blood streaming
from his garments, there being
wounds in his legs and neck. Tbe
warrant for arrest and commitment
was placed in the hands of a liquor
constable?Speed?for service. Be
got his force of men out and they surrounded
Sheppard's place of business, j
No one was iu there hut Sheppard. Fifteen
or tweuty shots were fired
altogether. Civilians and city police j
witnesses say that Constable Jenkins ?
started the fusilude, firing in the store
upon Sheppard three times before an- ; n
other report was heard. i 11
The constables nay that they called i
ou Sheppard to surrender; that he refused
to do ho; whipped out two pis- 1
tols ami began to tire at Constable 0
Speed. Speed's hands and neck were j 1
gl azed by bullets. Constable Jenkins,
who was ulso using two pistols, had his j
neck grazed by a bullet. Chief of > >
Police Daly, who was close ut hand, |
had di Jicultv in getting Jenkins to tr
stop filing, he says. Constable Hollo- | '}
way fired four or five shots iuto the |
store, tuis The bullets ure imbedded t j"
in a parfnAon in the store near which | p
SIk pp:VA was standing. Chief Daly ;
finally got inside and Sheppard almost \ i
shot jiim before be saw who he was.
Sheppatd stated that he would surrendcr
fo tiim, but to nobody else.
Sheppard was taken out into the ,,
street, placed in a wagon and carried 11
to the state penitentiary, where his | b
wounds were dressed. 'J'he constables i u
tell a different story of the battle from p
that of any of the other witnesses. ><
Speed said that fie went inside and ^
called on Sheppard to surrender. J
Shtppard told him he would not and
nulled two pistols, lirititr at him twice
re he could get bin own pistole 'r,
out. Then lie snya that Sbeppard >
dodged bebitul a screen ami kept up ; ..
bis tire, .lenuins and tbe others fired ti
in from tbe outside. When Sbeppard

out Sbeppard fired at bim again, .leukins
tells a story agreeing with Speed 1
in essential particulars. Sbeppard's
two pistols when talon from bim along
witb a razor, showed a total of only ^
four empty chambers, r
Sbeppard is an (.Id liquor dealer of
Columbia, but. tbe evidence adduced at
tbe bearing was to tbe effect that be i
