any save the malefactors, he was hanging to I
(lie limb of an oak tree without the town on
the Buncombe road, his body riddled with
bullets. About his neck was a plough line,
tied with a hangman's noose, the knot under
bis right ear. His feet were about three
inches from the ground. His body was horribly
mutilated having been shot with pistols
of various calibre nnd shot guDs loaded
with buck shot.
The body hung where it was found until
about 10 o'clock in the day, when it was taken
down by coroner Meeks and brought into
the city.
The city was full gf excitement on Monday
over tbe occurrence. Everybody deplored
the unfortunate affair, especially as the
series of facts wero such as to place the officers
of the law in a bad light. Some loud
mouthed negroes were not careful to conceal
their opiniou that a job had been put up oo
ilie negroes, and there were threats of violence.
It was even said that there was a
design on the part of the negroes to take
from the jail and lynch a white man who
was cjufined therein on a charge of murder.
Asa special piecaution to prevent lawlessness
and the incendiaries' torch, application
was made to Governor Evans, who immediately
replied by placing tbe Greenville
Guards and tbe Butler Guards at the disposed
of Sheriff Gilreath. The companies
were on duty Monday night, one at the jail,
one m me iiruiury. 10 ne cuucu 11 necessary.
It turned out howerer that tbere was no
ground for apprehension. Negroes themselves
held a ir.oss meeting Tuesday night,
and denounced tlie lynchers but at the same
time affirmed their confidence in the officers
of the law. They ridiculed the idea of any
violence or lawlessness on their part.

The f'onrcution campaign opened here
ycsterJay. The meeting was called to order
at 12 o clock. Mr. Wm. A. Nicholson being
called to the chair. The names of G.
Walton Whitman and Mr. J. C. Otts were
handed to the chair as being candidates.
These gentlemen were accordingly called
upon for speeches. Mr. Whitman was the
first speaker. He mcrelystated his position
on most of the subjects to be discussed and
gave most of his time to the proposition
that the state should i ot aid in "higher"
education. Mr. Whitman read from a
manuscript and had a good deal of statistical
inform at ion. The room was awful hot and
the benches and chairs were as hard as
rocks.
When Mr. Whitman had finished, Mr.
Otts was calicd on. ile got up and Btood
by liis chair and talked a little while and
tnen walked up to the front. lie didn't
talk long. Said that he thought the constitution
should not be burdened with small
matters, that these should be left to tho

It was the coldest, most lifeless, politioal
meeting we have ever seen. Nobody
seemed to care anything about it one way
or the other. In fact there was not enough
enthusiasm to adjourn. Somebody made a
motion to that edict, no second being made
the chair put the motion anyway: nobody
voted but everybody walked cut.
We ore entitled to four delegates if we

this public method of answering them.
1 fully appreciate the kind r.nd honest
intentions ot my friends and feel that I am
honored by tliein. but realize the fact that
other pressing public duties compel me to
decline being a cat A date.
Two of my courts will commence during
the session of the Convention and I think
it i" my duty to at>cnd to them, especially
in view of the fact tint there are so many
good and competent inen who will have time
to make the canvass anil attend the convention.
