Veteran's Meeting1.
Whilo the committees were being
appointed Dr. A. E. Fant addressed
the Chair and said:
"Old soldiers, I'm sorry to see so
little enthusiasm at these meetings.
I'm proud of having been a Rebel
soldier. \Yc ought to feel more
interest in one another. There should
be a sympathy between us At the
battle of Shiloh where there were
10.000 killed and wounded and
neither side was able to take care of
its dead an incident oceitred which I
recall in this connection.
The Chaplain of on Alabama Company
was walking over the battle tield lato a1
night and by the light of the luoou was ad'
ministering as best he could to the wants
jf (he wounded, here and there, lie saw
)ne poor fellow uot far off who bad only a
r?w more hours, endeavour to rise but was
notable. He started toward hiui but before
lie reached bitn the poor man had raised
tiimself on his elbow ntid commenced that
beautiful song 'Jesus Lover of.My Soul."
Almost instantly it was taken up by another
ind another until it soon reached the volume

The incident as t >ld by the Doctor
was very touching.

set in conjunction with the Tea Ridge and
Johnson Rides special committee during the

Ice Cream Treat.
Last Wednesday evenin Mr. J. T. Hose
gave to the ladies and gentlemen of Union
a delightful ice cream treat. He bas recently
fitted up quite a nice ice cream j ailor
and be made use of this original and happy
method of lettiug the peoplo kno.v it, at tbe
same time "treating" his fiienJs. The occasion
was aiiuouuccd by regular invitations
of which there were one hundred and seventy
five aud to keep them from coming in
auch numbers at one time, as to crowd his
parlor the invituti >ns state I at what hour
each person was expeted. These were sent
only to the ladies; the geutlemeu were
'-(licked up" here aud there ou the street.
The treat comineuced at G o,clock aud lasted
until six for ladies and there were over
a hundred who responded in person to the
invitation. There would have been more,
no doubt, but for the rain. After six the
gentlemen came. U.-erybody was delighted.
It look 12 ga'.lrus of ice cream to carry
the deal through, and it was ou hand at
the appointed time, asuico as you ever saw.
Mr. ltoso has recently secured the service
of Mr. Will Powell, who has quite an euviiblc
local reputation for his cream, mi Ik
hakes, etc- lie had charge of the cream making
and serving department on the occasion.
