The most interesting of these imprompta
olubs is the one oalled in the
vernacular "The Kangaroo Court." It
is found almost entirely in county
jails iu which patty offender* and persous
awaiting trial are confined. Dor-,
ing the day the prisoners are allowed
the freedom of a large hall, and at
night they lodge in cells, the looks of
which are sometimes fastened and
sometimes not. The hall contaius
tables, benches, daily papers, aud, in
some instances, stores and kitchen
utensils. The prisoners can and do
walk, jump aud play various games.
After a while these games become tiresome,
and "The Kangaroo Court" is
formed. It consists of all the prisoners,
and *he officers are elected by
mom. me positions tbey ii 11 afo the
'judgeship," the "searchership," tho
"spankership" and general "juryship."
To illustrate the duties of
those various officials. I shall give a
personal experience in a county jail in
New York State. It was my first encounter
with "The Kangaroo Court."
I had been arrested for sleeping in
an empty "box-oar." The watohman
found me and lodged me in the station-house,
where I spent a most
gloomy night wondering what my
punishment would be. Early in the
I morning I was brought before "the
squire." He asked mo what my name
might be, and I replied that "it might
be Billy Rjce."
j "What are you doing around here,
Billy?" he queried further.
| "Looking for work, your Honor."

find I was led away to the jail proper.
I had throe companions at the time,
ami after we had pained tho sheriff
aud liis clerk, who had noted down all
| facts, imaginary and otherwise, that
we had cared to giro him about our
| family histories, we were ushered pellmell
into the large hall. Surrounded
in a twinkliug by the other prisoners,
we were asked to erplnin our general
principles and misdemeanors. This
over, and a few salutations exchanged,
a tall and lanky rogue cried out in a
loud voice:
"The Kangru will now klect."
There were about twenty present,
and they soon planted themselves
about us in a most solemn manner.
.Some rested on their haunohes, others
lounged against the walls, and still
others sat quietly on the flag-stones.
As soon as entire quiet had been
reached, the tall fellow, who, by-thewav,
was the judge, instructed a halfgrown
companion, whom he nickuamcd
"the searcher," to bring his
charges against the new-comers. He
i approacUed us solemnly and iu n most
I conventional manner, and said:
"Prizners?you is charged with
! bavin" boodle in yer pockets. Wha'
I does ye plead?guilty or not guilty?"
1 was the first in line, and pleaded
not guilty.
4<Are ye willin' to be senrched?"
asked the judge.
"I atn, your Honor," I replied.
I Then the searcher inspected all my
pockets, tho liniug of my coat, the
leather band lusule my hat, my shoos
-itul socks, and finding nothing in the
shape of money, declared that I was
guiltless.
"You are discharged " exclaimed
tue judge, and the jurymen ratified
the decision with a grunt
A youug fellow, a vagrant by profession,
was the uext case. He pleaded
uot guilty, and allowed himself to
he searched. But unfortunately he
had forgotten a solitary eeut which
was in his vestpocket. It was quickly
confiscated, and he was remanded for
trial on the charge of contempt of the
"Kaugru." The uext victim pleaded
guilty to the possessioc of thirtv-six
cents, and was relieved of half. The
last man, the guiltiest of all, although
he pleaded innocence, was found out,
and his throe dollars were taken away
from him instanter; ho too, vu
charged with contempt of court. His
case oame up soon after the preliminaries
were over, and he waa sentenced
by the judge to walk the length of the
corridor one hundred and three times
each day oi his confinement, besides
washing all the dishes used at dinner
for a week. i
After all the trials were over, the
confiscated money was handed to the
genuine turnkey, with instructions
that it be invested iu tobacco. Later
in the day the tobacco was brought
iuto the j At 1 and enuallv divided
urn on g all the prisoners.
The next day J, with tbo other late
arrivals, was initiated as a member ol
the Kaugaroo Court. It was a very
simple proceeding. I had to promise
that I would always do my share of the
necessary cleaning aud washing, and
also he honest and fair in judging the
cases which might come up for trial.
Since then I have had opportunities
of atnding other Kangaroo Courts,
but they have all been very mach like

How a Fish Cornea to the Sari ace.
A curious physiological discovery
baa been made in the past year by
Professor Bohr, of Copenhagen, in
regard to the mode of storage bj
which a fish accumulates so maoh
oxygen in the air that distends the
swimming or air bladder.
The air contained therein has a per*
centage of oxygen that may rise to as
much as eighty-five, au amount much
in oxc638 of the percentage in atrnospheric
air. Professor Bohr tapped
the air bladders v codfish and drew
off the gas by means of a trocar and
air tight syriuge. The gas had fifty*
two per cent, of oxygen. In a few
hoars the air bladder was refilled, apparently
by a process of seorefion of
gas from the blood in capillaries on
the wall of the bladder. In one experiment
the gas thus secreted had
eighty per oent. of oxygen. When
the nerves connected with the organ
were severed, the secretion ceased and
the organ was not refilled.

vwill revolutionize iron-making,
and this prediction is borne out by
tho opinion of experts. The discovery
is amid to surpass in importance that
made by Beasemer. Mr. Harley's process
iron is made from an endless
furnace, with a peculiar method of
controlling the admission of air, by
which a thoroughly molten condition

is plain that the sunlight is partly or
wholly out off, and since the moon

in the shadow ail the direct light is
intercepted and she must lose her
brillisnoy. Thus we obtain what is
called a lunar eclipse. It is total if
the moon be entirely in the shadow.
The eolipse is partial if the moon be
| only partly in the shadow. The lunar
1 eclipse is risible to ererybody on the
dark hemisphere of the earth if the
olonds will keep ont of the way, so
that usually a great many more people
can see a lunar eolipee than a solar
eclipse, which is only risible from a
limited part of the earth.

cost several of the Chinese astronomers
their lives, as they had not calculated
it rightly. It was considered
high treason to expose prince# to snob
a danger without forewarning them
