DUring church services at the j Methodist church Sunday evening two autos were stolen by unknown par-! ties, one car belonging to Mr. Frank j Mathis and the other to Mr. A. C. I Weatherly. Mr. Mathis* car was only i driven a short distance when the! gears on the machine were stripped.) The other car met with a mishap at the corner of Calhoun street and Sa lem Avenue, the car plunging into a tree, and-was very badly damaged. The police traced the thief from Calhoun street for some distance by blood clots which were easily trailed. The driver, a negro soldier, was badly cut up by falling glass from the wind shield. However, the trail was soon lost, and neither thief has as ye1 been apprehended. The police an : exerting every effort to locate the guilty parties. Militia Guards Court Governor of Virginia Sends Force to Samfrsvilfe Slandardsville. Va.. April 20.? Bearing orders from Governor West moreland Davis "to protect the ??oiutthe AJbemaiio Riiles of Char lotiosville. consisting of three offi-; cers and men arrived here tonight preparatory to tho opening of the April term of court tomorrow, whenj Edgar Morris, son of a Greene coun ty deputy sheriff, goes on trial for the killing of a mountaineer at a dance. Morris, while out on bail furnished by his father on the murder indictment, shot and killed .Magistrate Bluford Sullivan here March 20 and since that time has been hiding in the Blue Bidge mountains. A preliminary hearing on the killing of the magis trate also is to be held tomorrow. Bequest for the protection of troops was Miiade after reports of threats made by Morris were received here, stating he planned to give himself up for the opening of court, thereby re lieving his father of the bail payment, and that soon after the jury was chosen his accomplices would descend from the mountains, "shoot up" the court and effect his escape. Morris is also said to have threatened the court officials before whom the preli minary hearing on the killing of Magistrate Sullivan is to be held1. Recollection of the Allen case, in which members of the Allen clan in the Blue Ridge Mountains shot up the Hillsville court in Carroll county, in 1912. when a member of their band was on trial, and shot five per sons, including the trial judge, die prosecutor and the sheriff, also is said to have led to the request for troops. ?? There was a good attendance of farmers from every part of the eoun ly and about <m pig club boys, as well as bankers and others interested in the county's progress. Practical ef fective talks illustrated with lantern slides were made on hogs, beef cat tic, and dairying. Plans were worked out to follow up a recent, livestock survey of the county with a farm to farm canvas, through the aid of the community eommittoemen. to rid the county of; every scrub sire. Then, if necessary, the banks will help to . stock the county with the necessary purebred sires. Though it may take two years, j there is to be no compromise on the scrub sire question. A good start has already been made,! so far as hogs are concerned, in the j fact that about too purebred Poland j China pigs were placed in the county! last year, and most of these are now' brood sows with good litters. This is a new venture in South j Carolina, and other counties will be j brought into line in time. Dillon county will be next to be taken up. This will give one county each in thej eastern and western parts of the. State as centers for this great work.! St. Johns.
