COUNTY TRUSTEES MEETING
Many Matter? of Interest Discussed?
Truste?* Approve School Census?
Tell of Work in Various Districts,
On Wednesday, January 7th, the
county ?chool Trustees' Association
held its regular quarterly meeting in
the grand Jury room of the court
house. Only a little more than one
third of tho districts were represented,
but a good meeting resulted, because
tho members spoke out froely, telling
what had been done in their respec?
tive districts and what they hoped to
accomplish In the near future. There
being no president of the association,
because of the recent resignation of
Mr. J. M. N. Wilder, on account of j
j appointment to another office, Mr. B. j
W. Dnbbs was elected temporary j
chairman, and requested to so act |
i until the regular olectlon In April.
I It was tho pleasure of the associa?
tion to have present, by invitation, Mr.
j I. A. Ryttonberg, agent for the Vic
trola. Mr. Ryttenbcrg impressed tho
trusteos with tho great good that
could be done by having one of his
machines .n each schooL lie offered
to lend a machine to any school for
u trial, provided good care was tak?
en of it. Ou motion Mr. Uytton
berg's offer was accepted, it being
left to such district to arrange to got
the Vlctrola on trial .
The Importance of having medical
inspection of school children was dis?
cussed, and a resolution asking the
Sumter county delegation to favor a
bill of that nai re at the coming ses?
sion of the general assembly was pass?
ed.
Mr. Dabbi favored each school
flying the State flap, as the law re-!
quires. It was suggested that tho dif
ferent boards of trustees discuns this
at home, and try to carry out the!
law.
A resolution was passed approving
a district census as requested somo
time ago by the county board of edu?
cation. By this census valuable in?
formation for all concerned in school
affaln <ould be gathered, namely:
the Dumber of children, between n1x
and eighteen years, out of school; .
number oi polls and <iogs. number of
fami.lev with children of school age.
etc. This Information should ba gnth*

dorsing the county school day, held
each year in April.
During the meeting the trustees
held a little heart to heart confer?
ence, in a few words, showing what
had been done in the last one or more
i years in their respective districts.
Mr. T. E. Hodgo told of the con?
solidation worked in Privateer district.
Originally there were seven schools,
; now only four, and may yet have
only two. Tax levy increased from
two to four mills.
Mr. J. W. Brunson had very
lately worked consolidation In Con?
cord district; combined four schools;
now has a line graded school, with
new building, valued at about $4,000.
This building was put up by patrons j
and friends of school, with a little aU'
from the county board of education.
Mr. R. C. Tisdale expressed him?
self as favoring better teachers with
better salaries.
Mr. W. M. Green of Shiloh. has an
ideal school district with only one
white school. Last year had a good j
enrollment, but poor attendance. Ho!
offered prizes for porfect attendance, i
j Only four pupils won. There wereI
J only 17 to start the school last yoar. ;
I He announced that prizes would, again
j be given this year, and 37 started |
! when school opened. There has been
a marked increase in attendance al
ready.
Mr. N. B. Murray of Stateburg, a
small school, with half the children
' coming from another district, show?
ed an enrollment of 13, an average at- (
tendance of 11; proposes to build at
the end of the present leaso,
Mr. It. C. Richardson, from on
other Stateburg district, said that two j
years ago his district was ii debt, j
They had only one school, 1> Jt now!
have two schools, with the district J
out of debt, saving for new building.
The schtrol has a cooler and family
drinking cups.
Mr. Dabbs said that in his district
thOfi were three white schools with
a total of 38 pupils. The negro en?
rollment In the district was abcut 406.
He hopes for a centrally located
school, which moans some cot solids -
tlon.
All agreed that such a meeting at
this was sure to do good.
On motion the meeting adjou'ned.
