Wilson olj this City, was arrested Saturday on a warrant sworn out by Southern Express Company for ob talnlr g money by false pretenses. Wilsen was arrested between three and four o'clock and was confined In jail until that night. While Agen Dlekerson of the South? ern Express Com puny would give r.o information concerning the matter It Is understood that Wilson got money from patrons of the company of the company by changing the express ( barges on his book when he collected for packages which he delivered and by collecting for packages on which the express bad already been paid. Reported That Men Who Robbed Store* at Pinewood Have Been Captured, It was reported here Friday morn? ing that one of the negroes who is ?barged with the entering and rob 1 ery of two stores at Pinewood Mon? day night has been caught. The r egro was arrested in Orange l urg and about eighty dollars worth of stuff which was stolen wan recovered from him at the time Ol his arrest. He Implicated another negro named Mack of Sumter, who was arrested Friday morning to be taken back to Pinewood that after? noon. The two stores at Pinewood were entered and robbed ometime Mon? day nicht and the bloodhounds from Columbia trailed the men to the station, where it is supposed they boarded a train. Hy following up dues the arrest of the Orangeburg negro followed. BIG COTTON DAY. Sattirduy One of Itlggcst Cotton Days of tlie Year. Saturday was one of the largest, if not the largest, cotton days of the year in this city, considerably over five hundred bales of cotton having been sold up to one o'clock with hundreds of bales on the wagons on the street at that time. The wagons of cotton commenced coming in early and up to this afternoon, they were still pouring in. The week has been a fine one for cotton picking and the farmers all over the county have been making the most of the good weather while it lasts. Several thousand of bales were picked out during the week and many of the farmers report that after this picking onlv scrap cotton will he left in the fields, although some of those who have young cotton have just commenced picking. The price Saturday morning was off several points from Friday and the farmers did not get quite as much for their cotton as they would have gotten earlier in the week. A peculiar circumstance connected with the mar? ket which has been noted by a num? ber of persons is that every Saturday this season the market price has fall? en off from what it was the day he fore. TO HOLD TEACHERS' CONFER? ENCE. All of the Teachers In the County Ex? pected to Attend Meeting In No venil>er. Arrangements are being made for a School Teachers' Conference on Thursday and Friday, November 13th '< and 14th, at which time school prob? lems will be discussed by the teachers of the county. Every teacher in the county is expected to attend, a holi? day of two days being granted for this purpose. The program will be arranged by Superintendent Hwearlngen and will be submitted to Hupt. Haynsworth. Prof. W. K. T?te, J. K. Swearlngen, W. H. Hand and K. it. Martin, all of them educators well known through? out the State will be on hand to make addresses during the conference. Must Produce Registration Certifi? cates, What is possibly a step to force the State to postpone trial In the Cnugh man case has been taken by the at? torneys for the defense, it is under? stood, in the lubpoenaelng all of the jurors on the first week's jury list to bring their registration certificates to court. At the last term of court threats were made by the attorneys for Caughmun to break up court by showing that none of the jurors were eligible to try a case by proving that their registration certificates had been signed by persons living outside of the county, who had no right to serve on the registration board. Because of this and other reasons advanced, it was thought best by the presiding judge to postpone the case, rather than have court broken up entirely, or its work go for nothing. This may again be the Intention of the Caugh man attorneys. In the meantime Caughman is resting Ig jail, he having been re? fused bond by Chief Justice Gary. ARRESTED ON BIGAMY CHARGE. "Pink" Andrews Placed in Jail on Warrant Sworn out by W. Y. Stuck D. E. Andrews, better known here as "Pink" Andrews, was arrested on Saturday and placed in jail on a. war? rant sworn out by W. Y. Stuckey be? fore Magistrate 11. L. EL Wells charg? ing him with igamy. The arrest was made by Deputy Sheriff John D. Ep? person. It Is alleged that Andrews already has a wife in Atlanta. On September 7th, Andrews and Miss Maude Stuck? ey of the Dalsell section were mar? ried, the charge today being the re? sult of information received since this marriage. The llev. G. K. Way and John An? drews are named as witnesses in the warrant. EIRE DESTROYED BUILDING. House on Oakland Avenue Ruined by Kirn Erlduy Afternoon. A building on Oakland Avenue oc? cupied by Mrs. I. J. Price and owned by Mr. W. A. Hrowrr. was practically destroyed by fire Friday afternoon. The lire was at length extinguished by the department, after all of the robf and ceiling had l>een burned. Mrs. Pries ran a boarding house in the building and was preparing din ntr at the. time the fire caught. It is supposed .,? have caught in the kitchen from a defective flue. Mr. Brown stated that there W8S a small amount bf insurance on the building. With Mr. c. Wltherspoon at one end and Mr. E. Khame at the other to work the machine, the audience Friday at the First Baptist Church were well entertained for a full hour and a half. The house was filled to the last seat, and after a vociferous rendering of the long metre doxology, Mr. Witherspoon set out to carry his Crowd over about ten thousand miles of travel. Beginning with a Sumter view, and passing on to Richmond, Washington and New York, he final? ly loaded the winde gang on the Cymric at Boston, and set sail for the lands beyond the great sea.
