You Got Common Sense!
READ THIS AD-THERE'S A REASON.
We came to Sumter 10 days ago with an idea
that we could do a mercantile business in this town,
the same as every one else who is doing a mercan?
tile business. This is a constitutional right given to
any citizen that pays for a license.
We paid our license to do such a business.
We rented a store from J. K. Crosswell and
gave him a lease on said store for one year.
We advertised a sale for 10 days, and in our
advertisement said that we were going to sell Dry
Goods, Clothing, Shoes, Hats, Ladies' and Gents'
Furnishings, Etc., cheaper than the other merchants
were selling them.
Now, read what the merchants have done to us.
The merchants complained to the Mayor and
Council of the City of Sumter, with only one idea in
mind, that was to keep us from opening our doors.
The City Council passed an ordinance, one day pre?
vious to our opening, making a license of $200.00 a
day, for us especially, more than any merchant in
Sumter pays for one year.
We thought this license excessive and unjust,
and opened our doors Friday morning, Nov. 15. Af?
ter being open just one hour, the police came with
orders to collect $200.00 per day or close us up.
We refused to pay such an excessive arid unjust
Tax, therefore our customers were driven from
the store and we were placed under arrest.
Now, there must have been a reason for all
this, and we ask you to use your common sense
and think this over.
ANSWER IS OUR LOW PRICES
And whtn the Merchants themselves, flatly admit that we are selling Dry Goods, Clothing, Shoes, Hats, Ladies' and Gents' Furnishings, Etc, cheaper than they can
buy the merchandise, it is time for you to use your common sense and trade at this store, the store that the merchants of Sumter tried to keep out of this city, the
store that the merchants of Sumter are i if raid of, the store that will give you bargains every day and the year round, and give all our patronizers justice.
We Have Just Received Another Car Load of Merchandise.
We will continue this Great Wreck Sale, and will give you High Grade Merchandise at prices that will make the merchants try and find some other way of getting us
out of Sumter.
