Mr. W. B. Hurns. one of the mem ben of the water works commission, Was pres? ent lor the discussion which took place. It was decided to order boil? ers and other apparatus for the pumping station. A discussion was next begun on whether electricity should be substituted for steam in the operation of the plant. Mr. EL H. Moses of the Sumter Lighting Com? pany Stated that his company would like to get the business and that he would guarantee th.u good service would be given at less expense than is sustained by operating by steam, as at present. He staled that the cost of installing the necessary electric mo? tors would be approximately $2, 000 and that the old pumps would still be retained n service in case anything happened to prevent the operating of the pjmps at any time by electricity. A number of objections were rais? ed by the members of the commis? sion and of council based on the re? port of the engineer who was here in the spring and advlssd against the use of electricity unless it was secured at not more than one and one-half cents a kilowatt.
