The only thing absolutely certain is that a con? dition of insurgency exists among the negroes of Matanzas, Santa Clara and Oriente provinces, especially in the last named, and that the government is straining every nerve to stamp out the rebellion, by the use of all the military forces at its disposal, even at the cost of reducing the garrison at Havana to a few companies. Additional troops were rushed by railroad to Oriente this afternoon and a force of 1,200 men was dispatched to that province last night. The new cruiser Cuba, which arrived here to? day and was accorded with her es? cort, La Patrla. a great popular dem? onstration of welcome, had hardly anchored before she received orders to take aboard 800 infantry and artil? lery and proceed tonight to Quanten? amo. It is expected that the La Pa? trla will take more troops aboard to? morrow. Several car loads of am? munition were sent to Oriente tonight. The secretary of the interior, Senor BrUi said this evening that newspaper reports alleging there were 2,000 In? surgents in^?riente were exaggerated The government, he added, had posi? tive information that the Insurgents under Bstones and Ivonet do not ex? ceed 150. in spite of this reliable Informa? tion, reports indicate that Bstonei and Ivonet have fully 600 armed and mounted followers. The American minister, Arthur M. Beauprle, visited Gen. Banqullly, sec? retary of State, this afternoon to de? mand protection for the property of the Juragua Iron company, which a band under Ivonet Is reported to be destroying. The secretary gave as? surance of protection, While the insurrectionary move* ment in Hahana province apparently has been crushed by the dispersal las* night of armed mobs at Marian . mounted police guard all the roads approaching the capital and all police reserves are kept at the station house. Two armed parties are said to be operating tonight In the southern part of Hahana province. Several Parties Reported Operating at Points in Vicinity of Santiago. Authorities Reticent. Santiago, Cuba, May 21. -Parties of armed negroes beaded by Gener? als Bstonei and Invonet are reported operating in the vicinity of El Caney. El Cobre and San Louis and also at various points close to this city.
