AEROPLANE FLIGHTS AT COLUM?
BIA.
Paul Peek, Rex-Smith Aviator Makes
Two Flights in Curtis Machine.
Columbia, Nov. 30.?As a feature I
of Thanksgiving Day in Columba,
Paul Peck, the Hex-Smith aviator,
made two splendid flights at the State
Fair ground race track, bringing Ap?
plause from the grand stand upon
each descent Each flight lasted
about fifteen minutes.
The aviator showed great control
over h's compactly built biplane de?
scribing circles, descending with the
power cut off, and then restarting
when near the earth and finally
alighting gracefully in the middle of
the held.
Mr. Peck Qualified for his pilot's li?
cence before the Aero Club of Ameri?
ca in the remarkably short time of ten
days. He is 22 years old and has
probably made more over-city flights
and has driven more different types
of aeroplanes than any other aviator
of his age.
The machine is of fine workman?
ship and shows great strength. The
main planes may be spoken of as the
Curtis type although in place of'
ailerons between, they are extended
on the top wing. A tail only is used
for elevation and depression with
Steadying pins in tho front, giving the
appearance of the headless Wright
machines. The engine is a 80 horse
power Hall Scott six-cylinder. The
main planen are 32 and 4 0 feet by 6
feet. The landing chassis is formed
of two pairs of heavy aeronautic
wheels mounted on two skids. The
total weight, as flown. with small
tank is about 1,050 pounds.
