Hal ley. after some very unpleasant

finally landed Wade T> ler, a negro
charged with assisting Arthur H w
en to escape. In jail here.
Bow en. a negro, Is accused of at?
tempt, ng to criminally assault a
prominent whi?e married woman, of
ths Sprlngtield section. He has been
sought by various posses since last
Monday, the day of the alleged as?
sault, but has so far eluded us
wnuld-b? csptors.
Suspicion pointed to Wade Tyler
as having assisted Bowen to escape,
and a warrant havtrg been sworn out.
Tyler was arrested at Springfield yes
tsrdsy. snd placed In the town guard
house Sheriff Salby was at once
notified and left hers for Springfield,
to bring Tyler to jail.

lock-up to a waiting automobile, the
sheriff was opposed In his ienlgns by
a large mob, which seemed bent on
lynching the prisoner, and for a time
the town was threatened with a gen- |
eral race riot.
However. Sheriff Salley was deter?
mined to carry out his plans and pre

possible, and aftsr a strenuous time
was successful, but not before some
member of ths mob fired at Tyler,

precipitate general trouble. The

sheriff from locating the man who

Considerable excitement was caus?
ed on King street last night when
Policeman McDonald was roughly

draw his revolver to defend him- ,
self and Policeman Dantsler. who
came to his assistance, was also forced j
into drawing his gun to put an end i
to the trouble. Only one person, J.
H. Smith, was arrested.

made up his mind to keep King street j
unobstructed by groups of young men, I
who, he declared, stood for hours at
a time at certain spota on the side?

Boyle gave very explicit Instructions

ed that he would arrest all persons
breaking the city ordinance, no mat?

For several days after the order
was issued, and after it was given ,
publicity, conditions on King street
improved. But the young men began

In groups of three or four, and to
make It unpleasant for those who
had to pass, particularly for the wo?
men, who. it is said, were often forc?
ed to take to the street In order to
get by.
Last night Policeman McDonald,
according to his story, noticed a
large group of young men in front
of the Royal Ponlcisna Cigar Store,
who, though they were orderly, were
blocking the sidewalk. McDonald, 1
according to an eyewitness, went over
to the young men and asked them
twice not to stand In groups on the
sidewalk, explaining to them that it
was against the rules and telling
them that he would have to arrest
them for It. The boys crowded into
the entrance of the Ponclana, It is

McDonald's club. McDonald. It Is
said, struck Smith on the leg with
the club. A general scuffle ensued,
snd the fight soon found its way into
the cigar store.
One who witnessed the whole af?
fair declared that when McDonald
got Into the store a large number of
young men jump* d on him and be?
gan to beat him, taking his club away
from him and knocking his helmet
from his head. McDonald evidently
felt himself to be In danger and as
soon as he could free himself he
drew his revolver. Policeman Dantz
ler then arrived from the next post
and also had to drew his revolver.
Most of the boys. It is said, then
made fheir escape, though the police?
men succeeded in arresting Smith.
Smith was taken to the Police
sfat!on and lodged on a charge of
blockading the sidewalk, refusing to
! move when ordered to do so. resisting
arrest and assaulting an offleer.
The affair caused the greatest ex
! dement on King street and a large
1 crowd collected around the cigar
