CRl'EI/TY TO ANIMALS.
Case That Should be Investigated by
Local Society.
A few months ago a society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
was organized in this county. It was
stated at the time that active ef?
forts would be made by the officers
and members of the organization to
prevent the cruel treatment of an'
mals. and to punish those found
guilty of such practices. Thus far
there has been, so far as we are in?
formed, no occasion for the Society
to take action against any person,
hence nothing has been heard of the
activity of the Sumter county Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Anl
j mals.
Thursday, however, attention was
I called to a case that we think should
be investigated by the Society, and.
If the facts are as stated, the Society
should exercise whatever authority it
p< ssesses to make an example of the
person responsible for the cruel
treatment of a horse that was dime
to death near Mr. M. 11. Heck's place
at Pocotallgo a few days ago.
The facts as vouched for by Mr.
M. H. Beck and several other re?
sponsible men are as follows: The
horse fell into the swamp sometime
during the night while being driven
across the causway by its owner, und
was left there entangled in the har?
ness in water, the balance of the
night, the owner abandoning the
unfortunate animal to its fate, with?
out making an effort to arouse the
neighbors to assist him in the rescue
of his horse. The next morning the
horse was found still alive, by a
passer-by, and Mr. Beck and the
hands on his place, with the assist
rnce of other humane persons of the
vicinity, rescued it. But the. long
night of suffering in the icy water
had sapped the life of the poor be.ist
end he died a short time afte* being
removed from the swamp.
These are the facts stated to the
writer, and the case is respectfully re?
ferred to the Society for the Pre
\entlon of Cruelty to Animals. We
are ready to furnish the names of
our Informants and the name of the
owner of the horse, as given by them
That Horse ( use.
The owner of the horse that fell
Into I'ocotaligo swamp a few nighti
ago and died the next morning as a
result of the exposure, asks that it
he stated that he will welcome .n
m\estigatlon of lies fullest and most
searching kind, that the horse fell
Into the water as the result of an
accident and that he did all he could
to rSQsm the horse and to have him
properly treated afterwards, and can
prow the same l.y g reliable wit?
ness.
