Rembert. July 19.?We have been
haviag rain, regular but gentle, and
the cotton had Improved a good deal,
but on yesterday we had a cloud
burst, which we think will lay us
by. grass or no grass, and check the
growth of the crop.
It le Indeed gloomy with the old
corn, ss a general thing, badly dam?
aged and the young corn grassy and
ruined by bill bugs, so gloomy also.
With the adverse seasons of the past
few years, and the increaseing In?
sects, which eeem to be taking pos
seesion of the fields, it Is almost use
lees to try to make anything, for we
are rapldlv sinking deeper and deep?
er into debt, because of unavoidable
failures.
<>ur roads are almost impassible,
and it Is Imposstb'e for any supervi?
sor, regardless of how well he may
be qualified, to keep them up. for as
fast as they can do a piece of work,
the rains come and wash It away. Su?
pervisor Pitts Is doing everything
that he can to keep the public high?
ways in good fix. but the extreme heavy
rains will not admit of It. There are
some very promising cotton crops in
this section, but the amount of dam?
age to them by yesterday's down
pour of rain remains to be seen.
There has been a few deaths In this
immediate section recently among
Use < I people. There Is also
some sickness among the whites.
Tour correspondent had the pleasure
of dropping In for a few moments on
last Saturday at the Children's Day
eserclses at Bethesda church, after
which the good people of that section
served a delightful dinner, which was
interrupted to some extent by rain.
Rembert. July 20.?The Children's
Day exercises for Bethesda church.
Which had been announced and pub?
lished In the Watchman passed off
eery nicely.
The most excellent and beautiful
programme arranged for the occa?
sion was tarried through to the last
gstatl. and the children, through the
persevering aid untiring efforts of
their Instructress, Mi::* fourtenay At?
kinson, a very capable teacher, ac
Sjnltted themselves perfecetly. tu the
delight of the large company who
had come together for the occasion.
After an important address a most
happy affair, by our pastor, there
was such a spread of good things to
satisfy the "Inner man." as these
good people kno." so well how to pre?

Misses Kvther Willis and Gertie

visiting Miss OonrlSnaj Atkinson,
have returned home.
Miss Annie Lag Alexander, of Co>

her aunt. Mrs. Mary Allen.
Miss M Iunes Is in our com?

From reports Mr rim flea Sander^
has an acre of corn that will break

Home of our farmer* are talking of
raising corn as their money crop. I

ton to improve, that is, enough to do
any good.
As for corn, that was done for long
ago. We'll have to depend on the
West for corn another year.
The farmers are very despondent
up here, and well may they he, for
nothing hut an unpaid hill In staring
them In the face. The fields are
grass\. and all has been done that
can be, but the incessant rains have
kepi the grass growing, although the
farmers ha\< kept it moving from
OM plnCS to another. A little work
In the mornings is all that can be
done; It rains nearly every afternoon
or night. The situation is certainly
terious at present, with no prospect
whateevr for improvement. We have
every indication for a continuation
of rain. No wonder people are mi?
grating to the cities and other places,
for out of ten years we have only
had one good crop year.
One man suggested that we turn
our farms into pastures, and raise
stock. I don't think it a bad idea, for
the grass will grow and the high price
of meat would insure a good price for
cattle and hogs.
Capt and Mrs. Vlnson, of Charles?
ton, are visiting their son, Mr. I* S.
Vlnson, of Pisgah.
Miss Pearl Napier, of Greenwood,
has been elected principal of the
school at Smlthville, and Miss Belle
McCutchen, assistant teacher.
Miss Colsey Robertson and Mr.
Harvey Robertson spent last Thurs?
day at Herrlots.
Mr. Willie Venson spent last Sun?
day with his brother, Mr. l. S. Vin
son.
Miss Belle McCutchen spent the
week-end with Miss Pearl Rogers.
While I'm writing this letter the
rain is, again this afternoon, pouring
in perfect torrents.
Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Dunlap spent
Sunday at "The Pines."
Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Hawkins visited
at Mr. R. Mathls on last Sunday.
Misses Geneva and Nellie Mathis
spent last Saturday and Sunday with
their aunt. Mrs. W. J. Norris, of
Stat? burg.
Messrs, J. l. and W. H. Shiver
went to Camden last Friday.
The rain continued through last
night, which capped the climax
Nothing can help or save the crops
now. The fields are boggy, and the
low places standing in water, while
the song of the loathsome frog is
heard.
Palmists will not be so popular in
Sumter in the future.
The population of Sumter will be
announced by the Census Bureau
within a few weks and now Is the
time t<> make your guesses. I low
