The Eastern Star Is an organisa?
tion composed of Master Masons in
good ?t?ndln.r in Um Ir lodges and
their wives, daughters, mothers, sis?
ters and widows. Its origin or begin?
ning Is not definitely known, and at
first It was very loosely held together.
About 1845-1860 Is the first known of
the degrees being conferred in tin
United States. The work has been
perfected and has grown rapidly be?
cause there was need for such an or?
der. Today It Is as complete and
beautiful In rltulallsm and t^ie lessons
It teaches are as Impressive and up?
lifting ss those taught in the Masonic
Lodge or a Pythian castle hall. It Is
as complete In jurisprudence and
government as any fraternity. Each
State has subordinate chapters held
together and working under a Grand
Chapter, and these State Grand Chap?
ters are a part of the General Grand
Chapter, composed of every State in
the United States except Delaware.
The General Grand Chapter was or?
ganised November 16. 1876. which
was practically the birth of the or?
ganisation, but not the beginning of
the order or founding of the degrees.
Mississippi, a Southern State. Wai
the first one to pass resolutions ur?
ging the organization of the General
Grand Chapter, the governing body
of the Order of the world as now con?
stituted. Besides having Grand Chap?
ters with subordinate chapters in
every State except Delaware, there
are chapters in Mexico. Youkon Val?
ley and Alaska. British Columbia, Ha?
waiian Islands, in Manilla of the
Phllllplnes, In Barmares and Cal?
cutta. India, and a Grand Chapter in
Scotland, which has Introduced the
work Into England. Thus you see the
sun never sets on the good work of
the Order of the Eastern Star.
This Is the largest organisation of
Its kind In the world. It numbered
In 1807 about 402.000 and was in
? reaslng at the rate of 30,000 a year.
Everywhere Its work Is charitable and
benevolent, and nearly every State
contributes its share to these pur?
poses. Some are helping the Masons
build Masonic Homes and others are
building Eastern Star Homes when
* the Masons have not a Masonic
Horn?.
Last November a circular letter was
sent to the Grand Secretaries of each
Grand Chapter In the United States
asking for Information about the
benevolent work of the Eastern Star.
The facts and figures below given
were taken from the reports. No re?
ports were received from Maine,
Michigan. Missouri. New Mexico, Ohio,
Oklahoma and West Virginia, al?
though repeated requests were made
for such. The information given In re
has required much time and patience
to obtain, as It has to be "gathered
hero a little and there a little." and
then put in shape. Doing this has
beon a labor of to me, and I am
fully repaid for the trouble in being
able to give my sisters and brothers
Information sorely needed, and which
I trust w 11 result In much good to
th. Stir and Masonrv. The
figures are reliable If the informa?
tion furnished me was correctly giv?
en. It Is my oplnhm that the figures
sre too conservative, for much has
been contributed and careful records
have not been made. No effort has
be**n mad* to ascertain the amount
flv.n bv local chapters for local re?
lief. Doubtless this would be a con?
siderable sum If It could be tabu'a
ted.

we have a subordinate lodge, espec?
ially In the rural districts and small?
er towns in the State, as I am thor?
oughly convinced that the softening
and ennobling Influence of the lady
members would tend to make us all
better and purer men.
"I am proud to say that I am now
a member of the Order of the East?
ern Star, and consider the ceremony
of initiation one of the prettiest I have
ever seen. The lessons taught are
sublime, and the furniture and re?
galia necessary are wdthin the reach
of every community. And while, as
I stated last year, we cannot recog?
nize the Order as in any way belong?
ing to and being a part of the Mason?
ic fraternity, we should, as Masons,
do the best that in us lies for the ad?
vancement of the sisterhood that our
mothers, our sisters, our wives and
our daughters love and revere."
The Steady Growth of the Order in
South Carolina.
When Brother Michie wrote the
above he was correct as far as the in?
formation he then had, but since then
other chapters have been instituted,
and we now number e4 and the mem?
bership is about 1,50D nearly equally
distributed between sisters and
brothers.
This sketch is printed and idstrib
uted for the purpose of acquainting
Masons and others who would be in?
terested with the work of the Eastern
Star and the good It is doing, with
the hope that many will become in?
terested and help extend the Or?
der by having chapters organized
throughout South Carolina, so that
our usefulness and help in building
the Masonic Home may be greater.
How Easy It is to Organize a Chap?
ter.
In order to organize a chapter it
is necessary to have a petition for a
dispensation signed by at least 20 or
30 persons eligible for membership.
A blank petition with ail necessary
information will be glaly furnished
on application to the Grand Patron.
Much of the preparation of this
sketch was done by my devoted wife
before she was called to her reward.
She was devoted to the Order and
to the buidling of the Masonic Home.
In both of her annual addresses to the
Grand Chapter and by a number of
r.ir(u!i>r letter.-*, ami In r.il of Iv-r
talks in es*..'?.bushing hapters she
urged the eastern Ster members to
take up actively this grand work. I
know no better w iy to close this than
by quoting a few lines written by her
at the close of her last annual ad?
dress, and as a slight tribute to her
precious memory I crave indulgence
for the use here. In speaking of the
Easter Star she loved so well, she
said:
"May it shine on the mountain, cast
its spell on the vale.
And its mystical radiance on all
hearts prevail;
For sweet is the truth on the Ritual's
page,
Seen by the rays of that magical
star.
Open to those of all clime and age,
Who living and loving its clasp will
unbar.
Glorious Star, whose beautiful light,
Scatters the darkness and illumines
the night,
May the glow of Its rays in all hearts
be cast.
Until its truth and its beauty are
understood at last."
