"Reports from about ball of our

"It is the consensus of opinion
that rains now will only make the
plant shod more rapidly ami there is
little chance to make a crop from
the new growth on account of the
weevil. Heavy rains in Georgia an?!
?iie Carolinas have caused a small
loss in condition in that region Ok?
lahoma shows considerable oss in
f.bout half the State, due to hot dry
'vcather; the other half about holds
its own.
"Reports from the weevil district
are that the damage being done now
is much less than in June, but with
rains the damage will increase. The

The Time for Ijaying-By.
The chief mistake made in laying
by the crops is in allowing tne time
of the year instead of the condition
of the soil and crops to determine
when cultivation shall cease.
To save moisture and to keep down
the weeds and grass are the objects
in cultivation. If the crops are suf?
fering from lack of moisture or from
weeds, why stop cultivation as long"
as the crops are growing?
The man who cultivates with the
plow is usually an advocate of laying
by early. Cultivation is expensive,
and late in the season usually injures
the crops by breaking too many root*.
The man who cultivates shallow and
cheaply finds it profitable to continue
I cultivating as long as weeds are
troublesome or the crop is suffering
from lack of moisture. We know of
no other reasons for stopping shal?
low cultivation, except that the crops)
have completed their growth, or are
free of grass and weeds and have ars
abundance of moisture.
It may pay to stop deep cultiva?
tion before any of the above condi?
tions are reached; or it may pay
cultivate deeply when the destruc?
tion of the roots will do less injury
than the presence of weeds and grass
It is a matter of methods, and condi?
tion of soil and of the crops and not
one of the season of the year, nor
number of cultivations already given
