Summerton, April 19.?This week snarks something of an "Era of New Ufe" tn the business world of our thriving llttls town. Much to the satisfaction of the whole community. W. R. Coskrey reopened this morn tag. In accordance with announce? ments sent out last week, he begins today the eale of his entire stock at greatly reduced rates. Already the town l?r alive with thone eager to take advantage of Mr. Coskrey's liberal of? fer; and It seems as If there will be no trouble In effecting Its ready die e Mr. W, C. Johnson, who ran a soda fountain In connection with his mer? chandise business, will this season m an Ice Cream Parlor In the old illllnery department of the Summer Mercantile Company. Mr. John expects Mr. Arrowsmlth, his faV ^?V*rt ?oda Jerker," to arrive tonight, parlor hat been furnished, the fountain put In plsce. and everything as In resdlness for the warm weather and its call for cool drinks. The residence being built for Mr. W. R. CosUrey is nearlnt Completion, and will prob Ably be occupied by H?m in a very few days. This bulld htg !? a very handsome and conven? ient!, planned house, and has the additional advantage of being located upon one of Summerton's prettiest residential lota It is situated on the eastern portion of Main street In a grove of beautiful oaks which furnish a lovely setting for a resldnce. Another evidence of the construc? tive *<?rk beim? don ? In and around town 1? the claying and rep tiring of the streets, already allude 1 to In for? mer letters. Dukes street which runs at right anKies to and Inersect* Main Street hss been cla\> i << Sf Its great? er portion; and \v. II IrMn-d sidewalks have been construct* | eg etthef aide. The force of labor Is now at work repairing the curbing on Main and other streets. This Is only one of the many Improvements being ef? fected by the town ocuncll. Fre? quent meetings are being held to dis? cuss matters of Interest to the town. The purchase of a tire engine Is now being agitated; and an agent Is ex? pected at an early date to demon? strate the use of one which wss ret: ommended to the council. The frequency with which drum? mer* are \lslting our community Is a noticeable and ominous fact. It would s.'( m to Indicate one of two thing* or perhaps both: that the stocks of our merchants and business men need constant replenishing or else that Summerton Is especially attractive to visiting strangers. Every train bring* more or less agents of all kinds, und the three hotels are being duly pat? ronised. On arrival at the station, the visitor has not far to go to "Hun? ter" Hotel; and the Hotel Central and Benbow House vie with it in affording entertainment to all comers. One source of amusement and en? tertainment to the people of Summcr |Ofl and surrounding community dur? ing the past week was an amateur performance given by the young po? ple here. "Joslah's Courtship," n comedy In four acts, was played In the school auditorium on last Friday night, the proceeds of which will be given for the support of the High School baseball team. The different characters were well taken, and the play waa quite a success. The music rendered by the "Summerton Orches? tra" between acts was one of the en? joyable features of the programme. Following Is the cast as given on the programme: Joslah Perkins, eccentric old man, Harry Davis. Tom Hart, leading Juvenile man, Grady Walker. Richard Roland, heavy character, F. A. Wells. Harr> Sharp, detective walking gent, Julian Scarborough. Joe, Juvenile character, Percy Ten nant. Mike, irlsh dialect comedy, Hall Nelson. Jeff. Ethiopian comedy, Ceth Ma? son. Prlscllla Brown, old maid comedy, Miss Annie Rutledge. Edna Brown, leading Juvenile lady. Miss Mildred James. Birdie, Soubrette, Miss Lucy Mood. Mrs. Black, walking lady, Miss Kate Cantey. The auditorium is well adapted to the exhibition of plays and perform? ances of all kinds, and is of Itself ai( object of Interest and admiration. The trustees of our graded school have succeeded in getting for Sum merton a splendid school building which will compare favorably with that of any town several times its size. Plans are now being advocated to enlarge the high school district. Petitions for special elections are be? ing circulated, at which time it is hoped by the trustees that the town? ships of St. James and St. Paul with such portions of Friendship and Con? cord as now He outside of the graded school district, will be added to the present high school district. This will greatly enlarge the high school and enable many more families to have the advantage of the present splendid school accommodations. It was feared last evening that Olli school would lose one of Its compe? tent and attractive teachers. At 10:30 o'clock, at the residence of the groom's parents Miss Cora Collins was married to Mr. Grady Walker. Miss Collins has for several year, been In charge of the primary gradei? while Mr. Walker has this year bee; a student In the high school depart? ment. We understand that Mrs. Walk er is at her old stand again this morn? ing and we hope that the aequlsltio. of another "Grade" will not prevent hei resuming charge of the othe. two. Mr. T. S. Rogan, who for some weeks past has been away under treatment, returned last Tuesday night. Mr. Rogan's many friends are glad to have him back again, and re? joice that his condition Is so much im? proved. We hope that very soon hit health will be sufficiently restored to permit of his resuming business duties. Mr. R. B. Belser, a prominent law? yer and business man of Sumter. spent a few days in town last week. Miss Margarette Plowden has re? turned to accept a position as book? keeper in the office of W. R. Coskrey. Two games of baseball will be play? ed here tomorrow and the next day between the Denmark High School nnd our local team. We expect the Summerton boys to maintain their old time reputation, and win the laurels. We regret to learn that after thl.? month Mr. J. T. Frlerson will not be employed In the Colclough Hanlw.u store; he will leave for Charleston In a couple of weeks?not as a result Ol the "send-off" we gave him last week, we hope. Parnell, alias "Dock" Parnell, under a life? time sentence for the killing of Rob? ert Randall In March. 1908, has aban? doned his appeal and was taken to the State Penitentiary last Friday to btgin his sentence. In March, 1908, Parneil, observing Randall working near the line of the lands occupied by them, and being enraged because Randall was paying no attention to his notices for him not to be about trig place, took his gur and fired without, warning, tear? ing a great hole in Randall's neck from which death ensued immediate? ly. Parnell was tried and convicted but recommended to the mercy of the court in the June term, 1908, but through hia attorney, Mr. E. C. Woods, gave notice of his intention to appeal to the Supreme Court, and has remained in the Jail at this place un? til last week, when the abandonment of his Intention to appeal was decid? ed upon. Since Parnell's incarceration, Mrs. Parnell has married again. The man in the moon is the only chap who seems to thrive on a high ball. Report of the County Supervisor of Sumter County.
