Manning. April 16.?The intelli?
gence received of the death of M .
Leu!? Lyons of Sninttr. saddened the
many friends that he possessed In this
t- w n, where he had spent the i Ml
portion of hu life and where he had
been for many years one of the
wealthiest and leading merchants of
Manning, his contemporaries being
tne late Mosey Lev I and S. a Iilgby.
They all three belonged to the old time
conservative, moderate and reliable
business men. who carefully looked
after the details of the business, all
three amassed fortunes, and left large
estates, with the exception of Mr.
Loyns, who met wltn reverses.
Mr. Loyns married the estimable,
lovely, charming and accomplished
Mlns Rose Levy, of Charleston, In
1S81, who was so much admired in
the social circles of Charleston, and
during her married life in Manning
had the love and esteem of all for
her womanly, wifely and motherly de?
votion.
Mr. Lyons leaves surviving him
many relatives aud friends in Man?
ning. Sumtcr. Charleston, Florence,
Atlanta and Athens, who will deplore
his demise.
There Is a peculiar situation In
Hampton county. It will be recalled
that In November, 1908, a negro
was lynched near Goethe, in that
county. The magistrate at the time
was J. P. Long, and he was re-noml
nnted In the primary. Governor An?
gst, however, refused to appoint him.
*\nd, In his place, appointed J. J.
tit apt. The latter has now resigned,
ov. IngVlt is said, to pressure brought
to bear\upon him and the unpleasant
conditions existing in the neighbor?
hood on account of the Influence of
Long. Governor Ansel announced
some months ago that he would not
reappolnt Ix?ng because of his lack
Of Interest In working up evidence In
the Hampton lynching case, and, a*
is now -tarn's, it is probable that he
will name some one else not connect?

Spider Cures.
Iu China spiders are highly esteemed
Iq the treatment of eroup. You get .
from an old wall the webs of seven
black spiders? two of which must have
the owners sitting In the middle-Hind
pound them up in a mortui* with a lit?
tle powdered nlutn. The resulting
mixture must then be set on lire, and
the ashes, When squirted Into the
throat of the patient by means of a
bamboo tube, are said to effect a cer?
tain and immediate cure.
Black spiders are evidently full of
medicinal virtue, for they are largely
employed in the treatment of ague as
well. In Somersetshire. If one is af?
flicted with the unpleasant ailment,
the way to get well is to shut up a
large black spider in a box and leave
It there till It dies. At the moment
cf Its disease the ague should disap?
pear. In Sussex the treatment Is more
heroic; the patient must swallow the
spider.
Perhaps, after all, this remedy may
not be so disagreeable as It appears,
for a German lady who was In the
habit of picking out spiders from their
webs as she walked through the woods
and eating them after first depriving
them of their legs declared that they
were very nice Indeed and tasted like
nuts.?Loudon Chronicle.
Asked Too Much.
In R. PI Johuson's book, "From Te
kin to Mandalay," the author tells the
story of a poor Chinese scholar noted
for his plet;y, who henrd the voice of
an Invisible being who spoke to him
thus: "Your piety has found favor in
the sight of heaven. Ask now for
what you most long to possess, for 1
am the messenger of the gods, nnd
they have sworn to grant your heart's
desire." "I ask," said the poor scholar,
'for the coarsest clothes and food, just
euougb for my dally wants, and I beg
that I may have freedom to wander at
my will over mountain and fell and
woodland stream, free from all world?
ly cares, till my life's end. That is all
I ask." Hardly had he spoken than
the sky seemed to be filled with the
laughter of myriads of unearthly
voices. "All you ask," cried the mes?
senger of the gods. "Know you not
that what you demanded is the high?
est happiness of the being! that dwell
In ncaveul Ask for wealth or rank
or what earthly happiness you will,
but not for you are the holiest Joys of
the gcds."
The Ungrateful Cuckoo.
To hear the cuckoo's cheery note you
might think he had the clearest con?
science In the world. He can have nei?
ther memory nor moral sense or he
would not carry It off so gayly. We
gay nothing of the "raptores," who are
a race apart, but the most disreputable
of birds, as a rule, tire guilty of noth
ln? worse than peccadillos. The Jack?
daw will steal for the mere fun of the
thing, for he can make no possible use
of plate or Jewelry, and sometimes un?
der temptation may make a snatch at
a pheasant chick. Sparrows are, of
course, notorious thieves, but they rank
no higher in crime than the sneaking
plckp< Ckets, But the cuckoo, so to
speak, is a murderer from his cradle.

House Owner?"That may appear so, but is it for what you get ?
You get a great deal more satisfaction out of living when you are in

can beautify your grounds, set out fruit, and arrange conveniences,
feeling sure that you will benefit by and enjoy them ; you take a
