Ptsgah. July 6.?The 4th passed off
quietly here. The negroes had their
balls an l picnics, and no fusses um
far a? I know. The white folks did
various things. Messrs. J. L. Oillis
and L. 8. Vlnson Invited u number of
their friends to Join them In a Ash fry
on Wateree river. In the morning
seining was done, and soon a quanti?
ty of Ash was got. more than enough
for the occasion. In the morning
Iced lemonade was on hand for the
refreshment of the crowd and at din?
ner fine catfish stew, fried fish, corn
bread, coffee and afterwards cigars
and the hungry men enjoyed the
bountiful repast. The place was be?
low the De8aussure State farm, under
several large oaks, and was cool and
pleasant. It was a most pleasant day
to all and each one thanked our
hosts for the occasion. From what I
saw of the crops on the farm*, they
are as good as In former years, but
more of that later.
The campaign meeting In Camden
pased off very quietly. Gov. Evans
led off, and his speech was cloar cut
and fine. Said he had bought no
newspapers to back him, and had In?
vested bq money In any of them. He
was liberally applauded when be clos?
ed.
Col. George Johnstons followed. He
made a short speech and his language
was fine. He hit Rhett a lick or two
and closed amidst much applause.
Mr. Grace than spoke, largely on
local Charleston politics. Pitched Into
Rhett and said he was a Republican.
He was also applauded when he sat
down.
Mr. Lumpkln then followed. He
made an eloquent speech on the sol?
diers and temperance and closed
amidst much applause.
Martin then came to the front and
woke things up In a lively manner. He
also was applauded.
The "Mayor of Charleston" was
then Introduced. His speech on
finances might do for those who had
ntudled the subject, but not for com?
mon folks. He dismissed Grace with
a few words, but nothing in reply to
Col. Johnstons.
E. D. Smith was the last, and the
boys gave Ella a good send off. Said
all the candidates were riding on a
cotton bale to the United States sen?
ate. Ills speech waa along the lines
of thot e he had been making for
years. Several of the candidates said
ths ne vspapera did not give fair* re?
ports of the speeches. From what I
could tee and hear Evans Is the lead?
ing candidate In the race. The con?
gressional candidates then spoke. Pol?
lock from Chesterfield pitched Into
Flnley, who Just smiled. Flnley then
gave nn account of his stewardship.
The candldataa for solicitor then
spoke. George B. Rembert of Colum?
bia made a fine speech and handled
the State and the governor In fine
style. Eaoh candidate had his
friends.
Mr. J. R. Hair, a prominent clti
sen of Greeleyvllle, and Miss Lena
Pack, of the same place, who have
been visiting relatives here, returned
home this morning.
Mr. A. P. Vlnson and family vis?
ited his brother, Mr. L. 8. ? Vlnson,
last week.
Mr. John Wesley Toung, who has
been sick for some days. Is Improv?
