Graham. - The movement lo erect a monu? ment to the memory of Fire Chiot' Graham, who lost hlo life in thoxdis nutrous flre on S. Hurvin street about a ycu ago, is progressing well. A beut $1.000 will be spent for this tribute to the late chief's rmm>?iy, nubsertb.d b;' the citizens and fire nun of Sumter. Of this sum $500 was donated by Delgar No. 3, i.1 squad, of which Mr. Graham was foreman for so many years. When ?this famous fire squad went out of business several months ego. the squad offered its horses and wagon to city council for a stipulated sum with the understanding that $!0'J would bo appropriated towarls this mcnumont to tin* former loreman and chief. The citizens of Sumter have contributed about $500 and it Is not at all unlikely that more wlil be donated. The death of Firo Chief Qrsham was one of the suddest trag? edies ever occurlng in Sumter. He was for years'an enthusiastic flreman, fon man and chief. He was one of tho most deservedly popular voung men of this city. Q> 2 a 55 S ? _ o Ton will see from the above table that the largest crop on record was produced In 1904, when there reman? ed to be ginned of that crop after Jan. 16, 5.1 per cent, or 683,737 bales, which, if added to the amount to Jan., 16 this year, would indicate a total corp of only 11,021,343 bales, but we cannot compare.with the crop of 1904 for there were ginned 12,767,600 to Jan. 16 oX that.year, compared with [ 10,337,606 or 2,429,994 bales less gin- j ned to same dato of this year. And it; is reasonable to suppose that a large crop, like that of 1904, male more top crop and could not be gathered as fast and picking completed as\ early as would bo the case with a small crop. | The nearest comparison that we oan<| make is with the crop of j905, gsl there w? vc -ginned to Jan. 16 of that i! year only 347,971 bates loss than to!| . same date of this year.
