POLL OF DEMOCRATIC: CON?
GRESSMEN TAKEN.
Said That Even Opponent* Admit Ills
Probability of Nomination?Enthu?
siastic Delegation From Missouri.
Washington. Jan. 1*.?The Wash?
ington Post publishes a poll of Demo?
cratic congressmen on their opinion,
aa to the advisability of nominating
William Jennings Bryan to the presi?
dency.
The vote Is tho preferences of th?
congressmen, who expressed a choice.
Is as follows:
Bryan. 98; Johnson, of Mlnrcsota.
II; Judge Gray. 10; Harmon. 4: Cul
berson, 4; Hoke Smith. 1; White, 1;
Williams. 1; Tom Johnson, mayor of
Cleveland, 1.
In commenting on the poll, the Post
says:
Each Democrat was asked the fol?
lowing queatlon:
' What candidate do you Individual?
ly prefer today, as the Democratic
nominee for the, presidency ?"
Tho aggregate reply signified a pref?
erence on the part of a great majority
of Democrats for Bryan, but not of
two thirds of the number expressing
a preference, which any candidate, to
be successful In the Denver conven?
tion will need. Nearly all those who
voted against the leader of bis party
In two national campaigns, prefaced
their chclce with a statement that Mr.
Bryan would probably be nominated,
but would likely be defeated in the
election.
One of the surprises brought out In
the poll la the fact that Mr. Bryan fail?
ed to be the preference of a majority
of members of the house from cither
Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mary?
land or Virginia although throughout
the entire South, he has been consid?
ered stronger than any other Demo?
crat In tho country.
in the A la bums Jelegatton, f ve voted
for Bryan, two for Johnson and one
for Culberson. This proportion be?
tween Bryan and Johnson, la the same
In Arkansas. In Florida, two are for
Gray, and one for Bryan. Georgia Is
strong for the nomination of Bryan,
seven declaring for him; one for Gray,
and one for Hoke Smith.
i
On the other hand, In the )<oulalana
delegation, only two are for Bryan
Three are for Johnson and one for
Gray.
Kentucky Is divided between three
for Johnson and thrte for Bryan.
The deciding number could not be
found, as* he was absent from the city.
A State almost solidly for Bryan Is
Mississippi, where six arc for Bryan
and one Is for John Sharp Williams.
Needles to say Mr. Williams did not
vote for himself.
The most enthusiastic delegation
for Bryan In the tfouth Is that of
Missouri Indicated not only In the
seven for Bryan and one for Johnson,
but In tbe warmth In which the indi?
vidual preference was expressed
In N'orth Carolina two are for John
eon, while eight are for Bryan. Ten?
nessee voted seven for Bryan and one
for Gray.
Texas voted eleven for Bryan and
two for Johnson and three for Cul?
berson.
In Virginia Bryan got only two
votes.
The Southern members of the house,
who oppose Bryan, were Inclined to
believe than anybody could carry
thtlr section, and. that, therefore, Mr.
Bryan could poll the normal Demo?
cratic vote. But, they said. In order
to carry the Northern States, which
have been In the Republican column
during the past tin years, another
msn than the Nebraskan should be
placed at the head of the ticket.

A now law of ihe Catholic Church
intended t>> prevent hasty marriages
will Dt announced after Easter by
Cardinal Gibbons and the other pre?
lates in this ccuntiy.
It is said by prominent priests that
the church Is determined t.? discour?
age tho practice of marrying wlthont
first having th-dr attention announced
from the pulpit. When two persons
signify to the parish priest their wish
to get married, the priests will an?
nounce the fuet from the pulpit for
three successive Sundays. The revi?
val of the old custom of the "banns"
gives opportunity to persons to in
form the priest of impediments or ob?
jection* to Hie marriage. If mne
Auch are disclosed the marriage may
proceed
It is said that according to the new
regulation two trustworthy ai.d respon?
sible persons must accompany the en?
gaged couple and witness their writ
the statement cf their desire to be
inarriod.
Tho law became known in Philadel?
phia, where Archbishop Ryan Is re-^
ported to have sent instructions to
tho priests.
At present the church is confronted
with the problem of young couples be?
ing mairied after simplv getting a
license or gcing to another city.
Many priests refuse to marry under
those circumstances, and the new rule
Is intended to stop such practices.
It is believed that with the .help of
responsible persons to attest to the
relationship of the persons t ? he mar?
ried and a thorough understanding of
them by the priest many hasty mar?
riages may be prevented.

ilF.HOVIX CHIEF A SEA CAPTAIN.
Sheikh Asliiri Comman/Is Moskwa.

From the New York Mail.
A trans-Atlantic liner, which reached
heie today, is commanded by a Be?
douin sheikh, chief of a tribe of near?
ly 100,000 children of the desert.
"Caot. Sheikh Ash tri," as his name
was entered in the custom house, is
the new commander of the steamer
Moskwa, ot the Russian volunteer
fleet Th? Moskwa was originally th"
Puerst Bismarck, of the Hamburg
American Line.
During the Spanish-American war
she was called the Don and was used
by Spain in an effort to gobble up
American commerce.
The forefathers of Capt. Ashiri used
to pilot "ships of the desert," and the
evolution of the son of a sand wan?
derer to the berth of master mariner
of a ship gave the dock man a lot to
talk about.
This is the maiden vovage of Sheikh
Ashiri in the Moskwa. In hon>r of
his taking command and because ot
his having won distinction In the late
Russian-Japanese war as commander
of the Russian transport Saratov the
Czar gave special permission to have
a marriage ceremony between hi* eld?
est daughter and her cousin, a Rus?
sian naval lieutenant, solemnized
aboard the Moskwa at Libau just be?
fore the ship started. The daughter
Is described an one of the most beau?
tiful girls in Russia, possessing the
dark eyes of her grandmother, a pure
blooded Bedouin, who Is living in Je?
rusalem.
Capt. Sheikh Ashiri Is worth more
than $250,000. He owns vast groves
of olives, oranges and date palms In
Jerusalem. The Bedouin tribe of
which he Is chief holds him in the
deepest reverence and has tried to
keep him among them, but he Is fas?
cinated with the call of the sea.
