The claim that the dispensary Is o
step towurd prohibition got a black
eye when the Alken county board es?
tablished a dispensary at North Au
guata. We believe rhat the dispensary
system Is to be preferred to prohibi?
tion such aa wo have in South Caroli?
na, but we ace no excuse for the es?
tablishment of th'i North Augusta dis?
pensary. It la a money making prop?
osition pure and simple and is on the
same foetlng as the blind tigers that
are operated In the city of Augusta In
defiance of the Georgia law. The
Alken county board probably has the
legal light to opere.te a dispensary in
North Augusta, but by so doing a
moral wrong is committed against the
[people of Augusta. It is a sordid pro
speeding and If there Is any legal way
'to put an end to It no time should be
lost In having it closed. If the peo
plo of Augusta want liquor bad
enough to go all the wry to Alken to
get It no objection will be raised, but
it Is not right or decent to open a
liquor shop right um' n* their noses.

A well posted real estate man who
has taken some pains to get his fact*
from first hands says that more than
$?00,000 were expended In building
operations In Sumter during 1907 and
every - dollar of this went into resi?
dences and public buildings?It being
a remarkable fact that no now busi?
ness houses were erected last year,
due no doubt* to tho large amount In
evsted the previous year In the hand?

There la one enterprise In behalf of
which the chamber of commerce
should put forth Its best efforts this
year. If this organisation of business
men succeeds In nothing else during
1908 it will have accomplished a
work of inestimable value to Sumter
if It can be the means of opening up
direct railway connection with the
Shi1o\ section The Betts railroad
hae grossed Black river and is being
extended In the direction of Beulah,
but unites the road Is brought into the
city from its present northern termi?
nus at the Betts mill, three miles
east o fthe city, it will never he of
benefit to Sumter There Is no use In
hunting; all over creation for new en?
terprises for Sumter until the oppor?
tunities at our own doors have been
utilised and improved. This railroad
to Shlloh, through one of the best
sections in the State, is one of the
greatest opoprtunltles Sumtei has ev?
er had for self-help, and as the great?
er part of tho road has already been
built. It Would be folly to neglect to
bring It Into the city.
Hov. E. O. Watson, the well known
and ab'e Methodist minister, will de?
liver an address on "Prohibition" to?
morrow night In the court house, un?
der the auspices <?f the Sumter County
Prohibition League. The public Is
cordially Invited to attend the lecture.
BEWARE OF PHYSIC.
Only Aggravates Stomach Trouble and
Never Cures.
The trouble with most people who
have stomach trouble Is that they do
not like to take time to get cured;
they overeat and then take physic,
which simply upsets the stomach and
never cures.
While rellof follows one or two
does of Ml-o-na stomach tablets,
chronic and long-standing cases need
at least two or throe weeks' treat?
ment before the sick headache, dizzy
spells, bloating, heartburn, constipa?
tion, nervousness and other symptoms
thut directly result from Indigestion
are banhhed never to return.
Ml-o-na Is entlrelv different from
the ordinary stomach remedies. It is
taken before meals, stimulating the
asorstion of digestive Juices and
str< ngth? nlng the stomach so that it
can doi its proper work.
