John Sharp Williams taps the co

says that while the white, black, yel?
low and red races are not the same
physically, mentally, morally, nor In
any sense equal, actually or potential
ty, and cannot be made so by plat?
forms or laws, yet they are creatures
of one God, and In the face of a greart
problem it would be well that all wise
men think more, that good men pray
more.and that all men talk less and
curse less.
But wise men do as they are bid?
den by Mr. Williams. The well-mean?
ing fool and the hoodlums who start
riots and the hoodlums who make
"Inflammatory" speeches are the fac?
tors for fomenting race strife. The
.well-meaning fool whose mlsgukled

th* negro problem in the South re?
sides, as a rule, In a section of the

In the Congo. The hoodlums who ex?
press themselves in action are North?

difficult to beat up a murderous mob
in Ohio than it Is In Mississippi. The
hoodlums who express themselves
from the platform or from their seats
in deliberative bodies are too often
charlatans from the South who belch
fire and brimstone with no higher,
purpose than that of advertising

It would be going too far to say that
there would be no negro problem in
the United States if the foolklller did
not shirk his duties, or that there
would be no race question upon the

friction between whites and blacks
and the white and yellow races has
been due to his failure to acquit him?

SHAME OF THE MIDWAY,
STRONG KElMlOX DELIVERED BY
A CHAHIXITTK PASTOR.
Remarks That Are Very Timely?Rev.
Mr. Duncan Went After Fair Asso?
ciation With (.loves oil and Spoke
Forcibly on a Mock of Sin.
"A stain has bcm left, which can
never be Wiped away. A picture hM
been painted noon the retina of the
eyes of the youth of this county,
which cannot be obliterated for years,
which makes them less pure than
before. These things have been done
by reason of the condensed wicked?
ness, the loud obscenity, the lewd
sights which stalked abroad and were
flung In the faces of Christian men,
women and children during the fair
which has Just closed."
These are a few of the strong sen?
tences which were uttered yesterday
by Mr. Duncan, pastor of the Asso?
ciate Reformed Church on the "Shame
of the Midway."
Mr. Duncan took for his text the
9th verse of the 14th chapter of Pro?
verbs, "Fools make a mock of sin."
He began by saying that he had no
apology to make for what he was go?
ing to say; that it was the duty of
a preacher and of all Christian peo?
ple to enter their protest against the
license, the lewd wickedness, the ram?
pant immorality, which characterized
the conduct of the fair, and that those
who stood by. looked on and coun
tenced It, were Just as guilty as any.
"What is It to make a mock of sin?
First, It is to make light of sin. This
was the sin of the old-time people,
and today it is becoming popular
again.
"Aaron trku to make light of sin
when he erected the golden calf in
the wilderness, and as a result blood
flowed like water. Achan tried to
make light of sin when he stole the
gold and silver from the tent of his
captain, and Solomon tried It, and all
of those lived to see their shame.
"Rome, the mistress o fthe world,
made light of sin, and crumbled. Vol
talr brought on the French revolu?
tion, which made blood run red in
the streets of Paris by making light
of sin.
"To make a mock of sin, is to en?
courage it, and make money out of
sin is* to mock It.
"The fair association, in order to
make a few paltry dollars, thought
It necessary to have the fair run in
such a way that the State has been
hurt, because Its laws have been
trampled upon; the church has suf?
fered, for whatever assails the church
hurts it, and the moral sense of the
community has been lowered for no
pure man could walk that midway
and still be pure.
"The children of this city and
country were carried to the fair In
a body, with their young minds re?
ceptive and tender for the touch of
sin. They were allowed to look upon
sights, the like of which I have
never seen before. Pictures which
would make the dance of Salome
before Herod pale Into insignificance
were flung in their faces. They were
shown men robbing the people In
spite of the law and they were made'
to feel the glittering beauty of sin
in Its awfulnoss, and to "Make a
mock of sin," and in the years to
come, the scene will linger with them*
to the shame of the community and
to tho fair association."?Charlotte
News, Oct. 28.

A Riddle for the Cotton Grower.
A bale of cotton, weighing 500
pounds, will make about 3,000 yards
of calico.
To make the calico, at the present
prices of cotton, will cost about
$102.50 in all.
Let us say that the spinners only
gets an average of 5 cents a yard for
his calico or $150 for the 3,000 yards.
In that case, he clean a net profit of
$41.50 on each bale.
On a crop of 1'2,000,000 bales, 'the
spinners will make a profit of $4 98,
000,000. At 4 cent! per yard, he clears
$216,000,000.
What do you think of that?
I can understand well enough why
the spinner puts himself to some ex?
pense and trouble to meet the grower
In conference.
He has a natural curiosity to see
what such a blamed fool looks like.
The thing which puzzles The Jeffer
sonian is this:
How on earth does the spinner
manage to keep his face straight when
he meets the man that he so easily,
so constantly, and so unmercifully
robs?
This calico cost you from 6 to 8
cents per yard. Therefore, you sell
500 pounds of cotton for less than $60
and buy it back at more than $180.
Xo wonder you are so prosperous
that all the Plute newspapers are ask?
ing you to ring the bells, light the
bonfires, toot the whistles blow the
bugles, and do everything else in God
Almighty's world excepting just one
thing:
Don't study the construction of the
trap in which you are caught.
Keep selling a bale of cotton at $60
and buying it back at $180.
That's one way to please the Privi?
leged Pew#who pocket the $120 which
you lose oh each bale.?Exchange.
