House Walks.
There was a special meeting of
City Council held Friday night. All
of the aldermen were present, Mayor
Boyle being absent on account of be?

TIIK ELECTRIC RAILWAY.

A conference was held in this city
last week between Mr. W. H. Ingram
and the other Sumter men who are in?
terested in the electric railway system
that is to be built here and Messrs. \V.
H. Lyles and T. C. William? of Coiifmbla
representing themselves and other
parties associated with them In the
enterprise.
The plans of the company, which
are now assuming definite shape, were
discussed In detail and final- decisions
were reached on several matters.
Within a short time, probably within
the next fortnight, a full outline of
the plans of the company will bo
made public and* the people of Sumter
will be, as It were, taken into the full
confidence of the promoters. For tha
present, only the general statement is
made that the electric railway will be
built as provided for in the franchise
granted by City Council and that work
will be commenced in the near fu?
ture.

Charles I). Donaldson, colored, who
claims Savannah as his home, is in
Jail here, no doubt a sadder, but wiser,
negro. He was arrested on Tuesday
by Sergt. Weeks, and after a hearing
before Recorder Hurst, was bound over
to the circuit court on th?> charge of
forgery.
It seems that Donaldson attempted
to get two checks cashed by a country
negro who had Just sold cotton. One
of the checke was for $15 and signed
?T T Thatch." The other, a custom?
er's draft, was for $10 and signed
"Oeo. Granson," Both were made
payable to Chas. D. Donaldson and
wore on the First National Bank of
Sumter. Apparently, he had tried to
get other negroes to cash these checks,
for several of them told Officer Weeks
about the man, and the sergeant came
up and arrested Donaldson Just as he
was fixing to work his game on the
country negro.
In the recorder's court he admitted
having signed the checks, saying that
the parties whose names he used
were good for the amounts all right
and that any bank would cash the
checks if they knew the person hold?
ing them. Asked why he drew Ihcm
on the local bank, he said -he did not
know whether or not the parties had
any money in this particular bank,
but he knew the checks were good
and he did not go to the bank himself
because the bank people did not know
him.

right at all and really had no reason

Northwestern Hallway to Rave New
and More Commodious Quarters.
The management of the Northwest?
ern Railway Will soon have new and
batter offices In this ottv. The old
building had become too crowded and
was not conveniently located.
The new building is being erected
just across from the passenger depot
and will be two stories high with eight
office room:.. The building will be
handsomely fitted up and furnished
and will be a great addition to that
part of the city. The work is being
done by Contractor J. W. Sing, and is
being rapidly pushed to completion.
The report made some time ago
that the auditing force of the compa?
