Quite a large crowd was out and a very pleasant time was spent there in the ^arly evening. A number of the old, dilapidated -. elephone poles were removed from .Main street Friday and the appear ance of the street is greatly improved. Most of these poles were rotten and were dangerous to toe left standing .on the street. The Sumter Dry Goods Company's new ad. is tolling about the proper things to buy for a summer trip. They say it doesn't matter whether you go by land or water, they can correctly by lan dor water, they can correctly and conveniently outfit you. li ls proposed to make a beautiful park out of the giounds surrounding the depot. The Civic League has' the matter in charge and work will com mence soon on the beautifying of these grounds. When the new sta tion i completed and the park put in order, there will be no more attract ive place to be seen than this locality. A pretty and neatly kept park around a depot makes a wonderful impres sion on travelers coming to a town or passing through. Work i* progressing satisfactorily on the new Court House and soon Sumter county will have one of the most handsome court buildings to be lound in the State, if not the finest. Hollywood Camp. W. of W., will hold a fish fry at Swimming Pens on ; the night of June 25th. The Wood- ! men are looking forward to the event with pleasant anticipations, and there -will be a large attendance. The city should post the names of the streets on the different corners. It is very confusing to strangers not to have any guide while hunting for a .certain' street. The fact that signs are needed is noticeable every day. Sumter leads all of the cities of the State in the number of automobiles. The handsome machines and the large number of them to be seen here is frequently commented on by stran gers. They give the city a metropoli tan air. A woman never forgives a man for forgiving her for not forgiving him. ! DEATH. j Rev. H. S. Webb, of Darlington county, the father-in-law of Mr. S. D. Cain, of Privateer, died Sunday and will be buried Tuesdav. THE SEWERAGE COMMISIOX Very Satisfactory Trip to Florida Engineer Elected-The Gravity System Adopted. The sewerage commission appoint ed by City Council and which left here on Saturday for Florida, has com- the trip. Messrs. Geo. L. Rici , R. F. Haynsworth, Perry Moses, Jr., and J. P. Booth have re turned to the city. The other mem bers of the commission, Messrs. H. C. Haynsworth, H. D. Barnett and D. J. Chandler have gone on a visit to the east coast of Florida and Havana. The business of fe commission was completed in t\ days' time and the result of the trip was most satis factory in even* respect. The sewer age systems of Palatka and Gaines ville, Fla., were inspected by the com mission. The location of these towns is very similar to Sumter and the conditions of putting in sewerage \ there gave the commission a good knwledge of what will be necessary here. The commission elected as engi neer for the work here, Mr. W. M. Lyons of Palatka. Mr. Lyons has put in about half a dozen systems in Flor ida cities, which have proven very successful and he comes highly rec ommended to the commission. The proposition given the commission by Mr. Lyons was better than any other they have received yet and the secur ing of a contract with him is consid ered very satisfactory and advantage ous to the city. . He will report here in about ten days for the commence ment of the work. The system decided upon for this city and as installed by Engineer Ly ons is the gravity system. This sys tem is far less expensive than the other systems in which expensive pun. ping outfits have to be used and is sad to give much more satisfactory service in a level locality like that of this city. In every way tho commission is well satisfied with their trip and its results. Mr. R. A. Weldon, formerly dispen ser at Mayesville, is now superintend ent of the bottling department of the county dispensary. The brigade of ditchers now at work on Turkey creek canal will probably reach the upper end of the big ditch at Calhoun street by Saturday. O'Donnell & Co. have a big, attract ive advertisement today, which may be read with profit by the shopping public. Look it up and see if it don't interest you. Mr. Warren Moise had one hand se verely mashed in the machinery at the Sumter Iron Works today and it was necessary to amputate one finger at the first joint. Congressman Lever will meet the members of the City Council and offi cers and committeemen of the Cham ber of Commerce in the council chamber at 5.30 this afternoon to confer with them in reference to sev eral matters -of importance to the city of Sumter. The Elks of Sumter Lodge, B. P. O. E.,. returned from Orangeburg this morning and several prominent mem bers express themselves as well pleas ed with the meeting and the hospital ity of the Orangeburg Elks. The closing of the stores and busi ness houses yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock on account of the carnival was greatiy appreciated by the clerks and showed the public spirit of the merchants of the city. Hoiiywood Camp, W. of W., had a delightful smoker last night after the work of initiating the large number of candidates was over. Ligrk re freshments were served and the social feature of the evening was thorough ly enjoyed by all present. Much comment is made by passen gers at the depot every day at the de lay in rebuilding the station. The present partly burned building is somewhat of an eye-sore and looks I rather bad in a city like Sumter, but ! better things are ahead and it will I not be long before a larger and more j convenient depot will be in evidence.
