He Not Only Touched on the Race Problem in His Lecture, But Dis? cussed it With Freedom, Candor and Bitterness-The Audience Was With Him. Special to the New & Courier. Chicago, 111., November 27: United States Senator Ben Till? man, of South Carolina addressed r; 3,000 men and women in Orches 6 tra Halji tonight for the benefit of fr the Chicago Union Hospital. It I perhaps was the most passionate and frenzied appeal to race preju? dice ever uttered by Mr. Tillman. He held up to his audience the spectre of "Black supremacy/' Jk painted in terrifying perspective. * He iost his temper when taunted from the galleries. He "cut loose" as he termed it. Profane and vuigar shouts rang through the hall, dedicated to the memory of "Theodore Thomas. They came /from Mr. Tillman "To hell with the law," he yelled, while all but a handful of his 3,000 listeners cheered madly. Riots were imminent on several occasions, Hisses and interrup? tions from half a dozen men in the audience, both negro and Ijfe white, drove the Senator into a frenzy of passion. 'Throw him out, throw him out," rang in the chorus of thousands of ?ces a? the interruptions were ; ???aae. "Shut your mouth," yelled Mr. V Tillman at the one who asked him a question. With all the consummate sar? casm the pitchfork is noted for he Jield the Mayor Dunne up to the ' ridicule and contempt of his audience. He termed the mayor ja "politicalowl," and snorted and % sniffed in utter disgust when re? ferring to the "snub" he had re? ceived at the hands of the mayor. "Why," said the speaker, "I haven't the honor of your may or's acquaintance. I never saw him. I never even wrote to him. ? ^ never rent any one to see him." All iLe while his voice raising higher as he proceeded. He then referred to his record in the United States Senate. . "What honor/' he snorted, ?"could this man in Chicago con ^ fer on me?'' The audience was wild, Tillman never let his hold on the sympa? thetic listeners slip. When the applause quieted he stopped short in the centre of the i \ stage, raised his hand straight up ^J^and yelled: "Why I couldn't dis - cuss myj subject tonight without f~ -bringing in the race question to save my life. There is no subter? fuge with me. I propose to dis? cuss the race problem pure and simple from the American stand-, point. I recognize the serious ~V cess and gravity of this question ^ more than any other man in this .house or in America. Proceeding to a discussion of ? the constitutional amendment which protects any citizen of the United States against discrimina? tion because of color or religion, he declared that the right to de? termine who should vote rested with the State and that it was the ?t constitutional amendment that gave the negro his legal status. A most pleasant and happy occa? sion Thursday was the entertainment by Mayor W. B. Bojde of a number of city officials and his present and former employes, besides a few close relatives and friends, at a Thanksgiv in gdinner, thirty-five guests being presnu The members of the Sumter police force, health officer, superintendent of waterworks, superintendent of streets, all of Mr. Boyle's present em? ployes, and not a few former em? ployes and friends assembled Pt his residence Thursday, and not a soul but felt deep down in his heart that he had a lot more to be thankful for than he did before he struck out for the mayor's house. A superb course dinner was serv? ed, and as the writer does not want to. make any feel bad who was not present, no effort will be made to enumerate all of the good things that were at the feast that our popular and big-hearted mayor spread before "his guests. As a host Mayor Boyle cannot be excelled, and as a hostess, his charm? ing daughter, Miss Mamie Boyle con? tributed a great deal to the pleasure of the dinner, not only by her pres? ence, and the hospitable reception she tendered each and' every guset, but it was also evident that she has fully deserved her splendid reputa? tion as a model housekeeper, and tried to break the record by ran? sacking the markets and stores to get everything palatable which could be obtained to tickle the palate. The tables were nicely decorated, and as course after course was excellently served the guests began to despair of being able to keep up with the pro? cession, but no one surrendered un? til completely exhausted, when Miss Mamie was handed the palm, and crowned as queen of hostesses. After dinner a pleasant afternoon was spent by all of the guests enter? tained by the' mayor and the mem? bers of his family. A few city officials were unable U be present on account of entertaining friends at home. The guests of Mayor Boyle and his charming daughter, Miss Mamie, ?who presides over the domestic affairs of our city's chief executive, appreciated the splendid treat tendered them, and departed wishing that tomorrow was Thanksgiving too, and with the best wishes for long and happy and pros? perous lives for each and all of the hospitable Boyle family. *** A Texas "Wonder? ?There's a Hill at Bowie, Tex., that's twice as big as. last year. McIntosh, Jr., and Miss Maud C. Wilson. Lynchburg, S. C., Nov. 29.-Last evening as the clock struck six at the home of the bride, Mr. John F. McIn? tosh, Jr., and Miss Maud Wilson were happily united in the holy bonds of wedlock, Rev. S. O. Cantey officiating. The ceremony was indeed pretty. Many handsome and elegant pres? ents were displayed after the mar? riage.
