FITZ LEE FORGOT ONE SMITH.
Reminded of the Pocahontas Story by
Man in the Crowd.
Lippincott's Magazine.
I The late Gen. Fitzhugh Lee used to
tell with great gusto an experience
he had during his gubernatorial cam
i paign in Virginia against Hon. John
& Wise.
? . "Mr. Wise made the statement,"
i
said the general, "that if I had been
named Smith instead of Lee I never
would have been heard of. I endeav?
ored to combat that theory, and in
every speech I made during the cam?
paign would touch upon Mr. Wise's
statement and would then briefly re?
fer to some famous historical figures,
in order to show that the name Smith
was-not to be despised.
. "One day I spoke before a large
crowd on the court house green in a
rural community, . and even before I
began my speech I noticed a drunk?
en man standing right" up in the. front
row of listeners. I took up the Smith
matter and informed those agricultu?
rists what- a distinguished family the
Smiths had been. As I warmed up to
the subject I noticed that sometning
seemed, to be worrying that drunken
man, and more than once he seemed
to be on the verge of interrupting me.
I.-, reminded my audience that a dis?
tinguished goveror of the State had
1 borne the name of Smith, and that
many ether men famous m war and
in . peace had borne the despised cog?
nomen. Meanwhile the drunken man I
watched me with ill-concealed anx?
iety. Finally he could stand it no
longer. Lifting his hand and bal?
ancing himself with inerbriated grav?
ity, he blurted out: 'Shay, gen'ral,
don't forgit thash old Smith thash
killed Pocahontas!' '*

XEGRO FILES DAMAGE SUIT.
Wants Big Money Because Conductor*
Struck Him for Insulting White
Woman.
! Greenville, November 1.-Through
J his attorneys, Mauldin & Townes,
j Hudson Johnson, colored, yesterday
j filed a suit against the Greenville
Traction Company, asking damages
in the sum of $5,000 for personal in?
juries and humiliation.
The suit grew out of an accident
which occurred upon a Pendleton
street car early in the month. In his
complaint Johnson alleges that he had
paid his fare, and upon being ordered
by the conductor to go inside, entered
the car and sat down quietly; that tho
conductor suddenly set upon him and
with oaths and insults jerked him
from his seat, tearing his clothing,
srtking him in the face and about the
body, and finally kicking him in the
stomach and flourishing a pistol in his
face; that he is subject to heart trou?
ble and was rendered unconscious by
the treatment of the conductor. He
further alleges that he suffered griev?
ous and permanent bodily harm and
great humiliation; for all of which he
prays judgment in the sum of $.5,000.
The complaint does not set forth the
2ircumstances, alleged to be actual by
people on the other side of the case,
that the negro when ordered inside
coolly seated himself beside a white
woman of prominent connections of
this city, and, when remonstrated with
by the coiductor, impudently' refused
to take another seat. It is said that
in the circumstances the conductor
was fully justified in using any amount
of force-necessary to protect his lady
passenger from the contamination
and insult of direct contact with the
insolent negro. It is expected that the
case will yield some sensational de?
velopments.
