WEDNESDAY, MARCH 29,1905. The Sumter Watchman was founded in 1850 and the True Southron in 1866. The Watchman and Southron now has the com? bined circulation and influence 5f both of the old paperss and is manifestly the best advertising medium in Sumter. EDITORIAL NOTES. Bishop Potter has shown himself ?unworthy of courteous treatment and Judge Benet should not waste any more of bis pearls of argument upon him. * * . John D. Rockfeiler is said to be annoyed by the refusal of his gift of ?100,000 to the foreign mission board, fie may well be annoyed, for it is an indication that the public conscience is becoming aroused, that the people ?re finding that there is such a thing as clean money and money that is not so clean. * * * If Gen. Linevitch attempts to carry ont the orders of the Czar to make a stand at the Su?gari- river and fight to a' finish, peace will be brought much nearer. Every time the Russians make a stand ' up fight they get the worst of it and it has been only when they make a quick retreat that they .get the bet?er of the Japanese. If .thsy would stick to retreating they might wear out the army of Field Marshall Oyama. * * * Admiral Rojestvensky is said io be ic:newhere in the Indian .Ocean, but rc body [seems to know where. The section of country that secures thefproposed railroad from s the. coal region of eastern ' Kentucky to ; Charleston will be greatly benefitted, and iii the road from this city to McBee via " Bishopville is . built promptly the chances of this road be? ing made a link in the railroad to Charleston will be excellent. If the Toad is not built at once the proposed road from Winston to Wadesboro will 'andoubtedly be built and this road ?will give a through line, though not .an air line, to Charleston, in connec? tion with the Cheraw and Darlington and Northeastern railroads. Right now is the time for the road to McBee to be pushed to completion and it is to he hoped that it willfnot be permitted to fall through. * ? * . The Living Church has answered Bishop Potter most apporpriately and most effectively. Little or nothing more remains to be said. . ? * The morning trains from Florence to Sumter for which the people living he tween this city and Florence and the Sumter Chamber of Commerce are working would be a great benefit to this city and the merchants who would receive the greatest benefit should support the movement in every way possible and use their personal in? fluence to supplment the efforts being made by others. It has been suggested that by putting on this train the reg? ular evening train from Augusta to Florence could be relieved of the lo tsal trafile between this city and Flor? ence which would enable it to make much better time. "We believe the train asked for would pay the railroad and we know it would be a great con? venience to *he patrons of the road. * * ? If compulsory vaccination can be ?os?orced, why cannot compulsory ed? ucation? Smallpox is a loathsome : and sometimes fatal disease, a menace j to the physical health of the State, j Ignorance and itjs offsprings, vice and crime, are much more loathsome ills and far more inimical to the moral, intellectual and industrial health of the State than smallpox is to the phy? sical. Public schools, if unattended, do no more good toward the uplifting of the ignorant than unused vaccine virus does to prevent an epidemic of small? pox. The public schools are designed for those who do not eagerly desire so education, for those who have the thirst for knowledge will make any and every ?ari?ee to obtain an educa? tion, and a ires public school system fe not essential to their enlightenment and uplifting. The public school sys? tem is medicine for the mentally sick and those who refuse to tak?the med? icine provided for them should be made to take the medicine for the benefit it v iii do the community. Has Heard From General Manager Kenly Re? specting Train From Florence. Secretary Reardon of the Chamber of Commerce has received a letter from General Manager Kenly of the Atlantic Coast Line saying that the request for a morning train from Ma? rion, S. C., via Florence and Sumter to Bishopville, and which will leave Marion and Florence at a reasonable hour after daylight instead' of 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning, and which will make direct connection with all morning trains out of Sumter, has been referred to General Superintend? ent of Transportation E. Borden for consideration. The request for special excursion rates from all points within a reason? able distance to Sumter on Saturdays has been referred to Traffic Manager H. M. Emerson. The secretary thinks that the mer? chants of Sumter could help to secure cheap rates and the special train too if they will only interest themselves enough by letting the Atlantic Coast Line railroad see that the merchants are behind the request, as the rail? roads do more business with the mer? chants than any other class of citizens in Sumter. -nm ? * t ? mm In Magistrate Barby's Court.
