3?cob Ridgeway Wright Attempts to
Commit Suicide to New York

New York, Jan. 20.-A man who
registered at the Imperial hotel as
Jacob Ridgeway Wright, of Wiikes
barre, Pa., and said to bea prominent
millionaire anthracite coal operator,
attempted to take his life in his room
this morning: He sent a bullet from a
S2-calibre revolver into his breast. He
was removed to the New York hos?
pital. It was said in the hospital that
Wright's condition is not favorable to
his recovery.

Ridge way Wright Dies.
New York, Jan. 20.-J. Ridgeway
Wright, who. shot himself in the Im?
perial Hotel this morning, died at the
New York Hospital about ll o'clock.
He was unconscious for an hour be?
fore he died. Just before he lapsed
into unconsciousness he said the
shooting' was accidental. His relatives
in Wilkesbarre have been notified.
Dr. Howard Pardee, Wright's phy?
sician, who was with bim when the
. shooting occurred, has been arrested.
He was taken to the Jefferson Market
court, where, after a hearing, he was
released in the custody of his counsel
unto tomorrow. l>r. Pardee told the
magistrate t?aat Wright was ill last
hight and he spent the ni&ht with nim.
About 6 o'clock tins morning the coal
operator awoke and he went to the
burean, got out i?apers and revolver
and said he wanted to show them to
the doctor. Dr. Pardee turned his
back to attend to some thing. He
heard a shot fire, turning he found
Wright lying on. the bed with blood
coming from a wound on the left side.
He said nothing further, he said, as he
knew nothing faither.
A Local Freight Wrecked.
?orence Times, January 17th.
There was a slight wreck on the j
W. C. & A. road this morning. The lo- |
cal freight to Sumter got a few cars j
off the track about six miles down the \
road. The rear of the train, contain?
ing the passenger coach, was pulled
back to the city and the passengers
were marooned here until the wreck
was cleared, about 3 o'clock. -

vention assembles, that is if the gin
ners make their returns promptly.
Last month the directors of th? census
was considerably inconvienced by the
delay in receiving returns from a num?
ber of gi miers ;ind fer that reason
there is uncertainty about the date
when the next r?:port will be made.
It should, however, appear .in the,
natural order of things, somewhere
between the 23d and 28th. The main
influence in the maiket at the mo?
ment is the question of whether farm?
ers are going to hold or whether the
recent selling at isolated places is to
spread and result in a general liquida?
tion of long holdings. Whoever can an?
swer this question correctly, can solve
the problem of prices for the next few
weeks."
