Dick and Alder? men Barnett, Haynsworth, Hood, Rowland, Stubbs and Wilder present. Absent Aldermen-Finn and Hurst S?rst. & Mr. H. J. On motion of Messrs. Wilder and Hood :he request was refused as lumber mills are not such enterprises as are contemplated by the ordinance. Messrs. H. F. Wilson and J. L. Aldermen Hayns? worth, Rowland and Barnett were ap? pointed to investigate $he proposed route, its feaidbility, etc, and report -within three days to a special meeting off the cou ncil. * The minutes of December 21 and January S th were read and approved. Mr. Hood of the committee on fire alarm advised that the Gameweil sys ^^aystem advised that the Gam ewell sys? tem be installed at once. Mr. O. P. Crocker, representing the Gamewell company, was present and demon? strated the working of the fire alarm ? system He offered to erect 8 miles . of wire, seventeen alarm boxes, indi : caters, etc., for $3,500, payable in five annual Installments, with interest at % $ per cent on deferred payments. Mr. Rowland expressed his confidence in the efficiency of the Game-rell ser? vice but did no think it necessary in so small a place as Sumter. He and Mr. Barnett moved that the purchase be deferred, but the motion was defeated. Messrs. Stubbs and Hood moved that the purchase to be made on the terms offered. This resolution prevailed, Messrs. Rowland and Barnet voting -against lt. On motion of Messrs^'ROw land and Haynsworth the number of alarm Ixxxes was reduced to 12 at a cost of $3,000. A petition of citizens for a fire hy? drant ,a.t the corner of Salem avenue , and Haynsworth street was referred to the committee of public works. Officer W. W. McKagen was direct? ed to aid in the collection of city taxes and .licenses. Bills and claims on file were referred to the finance committee. Council adjourned at 11:45. This city is now within a measura? ble distance of having an electric street railway, the ordinance granting Mr. J. Li. Alnutt and associates the right to construct and operate an elec? tric street railway and a power sta? tion, having been formally adopted bs the city council at the regular meet? ing last Wednesday night The ordinance granting the fran? chise is practically the same as that granted some months ago to Mr. D. A. Minor and others, there being only a few unimportant changes in the. phra? seology. The franchise covers a period of -fifty years, the company is granted exemption from city taxes and licenses for five years and the company is giv? en the right to use certain specified streets and any. others that may be found necessary. ? Mr. Alnutt and his associates are J given thirty, days in which to file an acceptance of- the franchise, six months in which to begin the work of construction in good, faith and 18 months from, the date of acceptance of the franchise in which to compete the railway system and have it in oper i ation. Mr. Alnutt called at the city clerk's I office this morning and signed an ac? ceptance of the franchise, and he is therefore bound to begin work on or ? before July 12th next and. to complete the street railway and have it in oper [ ation on or before July 12, 1906. Mr. Alnutt is not ready to talk of his plans, but he expresses the utmost confidence in the ability of himself and associates to constant and have the street railway in successful oper? ation well within the time limit. / The route of the proposed rail? way as stated in the franchise is as follows: From the Atlantic Coast Lane sta? tion on Mary street, through Tele? phone and Bartlett streets, Har vin street to Main street.
