On January 5th the Baltimore and
Ohio ra?rcad placed in active service
a compound freight locomotive which
is hy Sarthe largest machine of the
kind in the world. The locomotive
was built at the Schenectady works
of the American Locomotive Com?
pany andr an. official test was made be?
tween Cumberland and Hyndman. a
-distance cf fourteen miles, on Wed?
nesday afternoon. January 4th, the
tess oeing entirely successful. This lo?
comotive was built for the purpose of
helping freight trains over the grade
from Sand Patch to Rockwood on the
Conneilsville division, a distance of 16
miles west of Cumberland, and from
there io Rockwood the grade"" ranges
from .1.3 to nearly 2 per cent. The
heaviest grade is at the rate of about
1,000 feet to the mile. The locomotive
was secured for use in "pusher ser?
vice," to help' the freight trains over
Sand Patch Hilt, on the Alleghany
mountains.
It Ls, in fact, a pair of locomotives
with one boiler. Th? engine, in work?
ing order, weighs 334,500 pounds, an<
the weight of the tender, filled with
7.000 galions of water and thirteei
tons of coal, ,is 143,000 pounds. It
the greatest heating surface ever put
into a locomotive-5,5S6 square feet,
of which 219.4 square feet are in the
firebox and 5,366.3 square feet in th*
tubes, which are twenty-one feet long.
These proportions outdo anything of
the kind designed for a locomotive.
The imemnse power of the locomotive
may be conceived in the drawbar pull
of 70,000 pounds, which- it can exert
working compound, or 80,000 pounds
in simple gear. The boiler will carry
a working pressure of 23 5 pounds.

the heat of the-sun is more than dou?
bl? that of the electric arc which has
hitherto been the highest known tem?
perature-8,500 degrees Fahrenheit.
He has found that there is no known
substance, not even asbestos, that will
not fuse in his sun furnace, into which
the concentrated rays of his mirror
refleciir and concentrator are thrown
