ENDOWMENT FOR COLLEGE.
Alumni of South Carolina College Start
Movement to Raise $100,000.
Columbia, Jan. ll.-The alumni of
the South Carolina college have de?
cided to inaugurate a campaign to
raise an endowment fund of $100,000
At a rousing meeting of the associa?
tion yesterday afternoon, a very good
start was made. The class of 1885 gave
$1,000 and others contributed liberally.
There is now a fund of $10;000 raised
after earnest effort
South Carolina college depends np*
on the ali tifo meagre appropriation j
made hy the legislature, about $30,
000 a year? while denominational
schools in this state and state colleges
in other states have large endow?
ments and bequests.
In the chapel of the South Carolina
college at 4 o'clock yesterday after?
noon was held this enthusiastic meet- -
lng of the alumni association. The hall
was well fiGed with representative
men of the state who formerly attend?
ed the institution BOW bejrinning its
second century of achievement.
The meeting: was called to order by
the president of the association. Mr.
Edwin G. Sieoete. Mr. August Kohn,
the treasurer, then gave account cf
the funds subscribed at the last meet?
ing and added that at present there
are JO young men at the college who
are receiving' assistance froml the "as- j
sccfe.t$t>n. These yoong mer. have giv?
en notes to bear interest one year af
' tr.
ter graduation or after severing con*
nection with the institution.
At the conclusion of this report,
President Siebels. admitted, that for
may years he had been indifferent to
the interest of his alma mater and not
, until he had attended a celebration
of a -northern university and seen the
enthusiasm thtre had he truly realiz- j
ed the debt due by him to the institu- j
tion from which he had received his
diploma. He had come home resolved
: that henceforth his interest in the coi
' lege would be uppermost in his mind.
Mr. S?ebels said that it w?is the earn- j
est desire of t&e* alumni association to
raise an endowment fund of $100,000
and in his opinion it could be done m
five years. Then would the association
be in a position to endow a chair and
perpetuate itself. He then called at?
tention to the fact that should this
sum be contributed, then would the ?
college be in a position to cease heg
ging and cc^d demand what is need?
ful for the education of young men j
?nd women. \ 1
"Already," said Mr. Siebels, "the as- |
socia?on has a nucleus of almost $10^
000 and it is a well known principle
of oiliness that the .first $10,0Q0 is the
.most diifiouit'to obtain; after'that the
way is smooth." Mr. -Siebels suggested
to any alumnus who desired to sub?
scribe that nc'W was the most fitting
opportunity. Be the sum large or small j
it would be gratefully received. ^?J
At this point Mr. R, P. Hamer, Jr., ]
a loyal alumnus and a trustee, obtain?
ed recognition from the chair and j
stated that , he had a motion to place
before the assembly for consideration.
'-Mr. Hamer then introduced the fol?
lowing resolution:
"That should any class contribute
the amount of $1,000 for the estab?
lishment of a class scholarship the
alumni association would pay the dif?
ference required to support that schol?
arship; provided, that at the end of 5
years the class shall subscribe another
$1,000 and at the end of 10 years
another $1,000, which sum at a rea?
sonable interest will be sufficient to
support that scholarship."
The resolution was then adopted j
without a dissenting vote
"Then," f?-id Mr. Hamer. "I wish
announce that the class of 1885
ishes to subscriBe $1,0*?"> for ibis
scholarship."
Mr. Hamer then took his seat amid
deafening applause and the assem?
blage caught the inspiration and the
enthusiasm of the members of the
class of 1885.
At this juncture the president an
I nounced that the term of the trustee
who was elected at the last meeting
had expired and that election was nec?
essary to fill the vacancy.
Mr. Mciver Williamson of Darling?
ton, the incumbent, was nominated
and unanimously reelected.
Mr. P. A. Wilcox of the class of '87 I
then led .the movement in personal
subscriptions. He stated that hitherto
he had not contributed to the fund
and would like to announce that he
would give $500 towards the endow?
ment fund.
Hon. A. T. Smythe, of Charleston, I
contributed $100 a year for five
years.
Mr. Henry Mullins, of Marion, said
that he would like the privilege of in?
creasing his former contribution to
$500.
Hon. James A. McCullough, of '87,
of Greenville, raised his donation to
$500.
Mr. R. P. Hamer, Jr., then moved
that a committee of three .be appoint?
ed to design a button to be worn by
the alumni of the college at au public
functions and also to provide a safe?
guard against the insignia being worn
by persons -net entitled thereto.-The
State.
